Windows 10: File Explorer locks up in Home section

When select File Explorer it goes to Home and say working on it but nothing happens and it locks up. If I right click on the icon and select anything else it seems to work

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

File Explorer freezes when hovering the cursor over the "create" section.

Hi Alex,

To better assist you, we'd like to know the following:

• Did you make any changes prior to this issue?
• Are you getting any error messages after File Explorer freezes?
• What troubleshooting have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest you restart Windows Explorer by following the steps below:

• Type Task Manager in search bar.
• Click Task Manager.
• On the pop-up window, under Windows processes, scroll-down to
  Windows Explorer.
• Right-click Windows Explorer, and click Restart.

Locking the file explorer

I am confused: in post #7 you say it's sorted, then you follow up 2 weeks later with a retraction - was it sorted (unfortunate use of words there) or not? In any event, I don't think anyone suggested using the 'group by' setting - in my view it is an unnecessary distraction, and I always turn it off. That said, this is what I thought was being suggested, and seems to work:

1. Default condition: files are sorted by name:



2. So when I try to chnage the name of a file like so...



3... as soon as I finish, Explorer resorts thus:



4. So change sort order by clicking anywhere on the 'date' header (highlighted in lt-blue) - see attachment at bottom - I'm buggered if I can work out how to get it where it belongs!
... to give this:



5. Try rename again:
