Windows 10: File Explorer - Not responding

After reboot the File Explorer with Preview Pane will work fine for a day or two. After that it will not give any preview of any files other than image files, all I get is the "Not responding". However, it will work with Details pane.


I've installed newest display driver. In File Explorer Options I've restored defaults plus cleared file explorer histroy.


During installations of other software I have accepted when offered to show their files in Preview pane.


Any idea what the problem can be? My PC also run as server for two other PCs so I don't want to reboot every day.

We are not sure whether or not you have tried the above suggestion. If haven’t tried, follow the methods suggested above and check if the issue is resolved.



If the issue persists, scan the PC for the presence of virus/malware by running the antivirus security software. Run the antivirus security software twice to detect and confirm the presence of malware/virus on your PC. Check for the status of the scan
to view the presence of virus/malware.

Windows 10 file explorer not responding

following ALL of the above steps did nothing. explorer.exe still broken.

additional steps taken:

1x system refresh, explorer still dead

1x clean boot, explorer still dead

3x sfc /scannow, rebooted in between, explorer still dead

1x restore point, all programs uninstalled, explorer worked for 4 hours, then died.

1x reset, explorer still never opened

1x reverted back to 8.1, explorer woked, autoupdated to 10, explorer died

1x COMPLETE WIPE, reinstalled 8.1, autoupdated to 10, explorer died.

wiping again. reeinstalling 8.1. turning off updates for good.

amazing this CRITICAL issue exists at all.
