Windows 10: File Explorer obfuscated my entire music library

This is the aftermath of some odd combination of keys I accidentally pressed.Before I had a very neat file structure of artists -> album -> file format -> tracks but somehow every artist in the structure was replaced with Blink-182.This isn't the worst thing to have happen, it will be somewhat of a pain to restore the folders to their original state since I cannot Ctrl-Z this issue. File Explorer did happen to crash completely after the aforementioned combination of keys which would explain why Undo would n

I suggest you to follow the below steps to resolve the issue.

Method: Restore default Libraries

I would suggest you try the restore library option and check if it helps. Please back up all the files in the library before trying this, just to make sure you don’t lose any files. Refer these steps:

• Open Windows explorer
• In the left panel, locate Library and right click on it
• Click “restore default libraries” option
• Check if the issue persists.

Libraries?? What's the difference between Windows Media Player Libraries and File Explorer Libraries?

I am trying to find out

1: how to use Windows 10 File Explorer libraries?

2: what libraries are for?

3: how Windows 10 File Explorer libraries are different or similar to Windows Media Player libraries?

4: Where does Windows Media Player get its media database from?

I see Libraries listed in File Explorer and the subfolders Music, Pictures, Videos.

I have found out how to add folders to them. (by right clicking the folder I want to add and clicking 'include in library', then choose the appropriate library for the file type).

When I open Windows Media Player, I can choose Music, Pictures or Video from the list on the left of the player. However, the files in Windows Media Player Video Library are not the same ones as the files I've added to the File Explorer Video Library.

Any helpful advice appreciated.

 

Music Library Failing to Add Folders

File Explorer Libraries are defined by XML files (with a hidden .library-ms extension that can be seein in a file listing from Command Prompt/Powershell). These definition files are found in the folder:

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries

(Copy & paste into File Explorer Address Bar)

If you delete 'Music', and then restart, the default Music Library will be re-created. You could then try re-adding your custom locations from File Explorer.

This does not delete any of your music files, just the Library definition, which is essentially a saved search.
