Windows 10: File Explorer Renaming Error - Folder or File is Open in Another Program

If I open a document in the file explorer and then close it, I am unable to rename the folder that the document is saved in unless I wait quite a while. Otherwise, I receive a message that says "This action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." I am able to rename the file that was originally opened, just not the folder it is saved in. This is the case for all folders on my computer, and the problem has been persisting for a week. I have tried restarting my computer, restarting windows explorer, checking the task manager for open programs, and not

Thanks for that will get on it. In meantime, the folder name, rename, delete issues and related error messages in part is just because windows explorer has suddenly started requiring a refresh for each step to show the new folder for renaming, then again after it has been renamed etc. So I have to keep hitting F5 for every step in the process including the moving of files from one folder to another. Is there a solution to that? That would be part of the probelm solved and I can then see if there are any remaining problems. Thanks - - - Updated - - -

Tha bit has been solved by a restart of explorer. I will watch for any remaining issues and folow dalchina's advice should they still be present.

 

Cannot Rename File Folders in Win10

Were you able to resolve your issue? This has started happening to me the last few days and it is driving me crazy. Symptoms are:

• Renaming any folder results in "Can't find the specified file"
• Clicking 'Try Again' gives the error, "The file or folder does not exist"
• I am able to rename folders through any means except Explorer. It is not a permissions issue. I can write a small program that renames folders fine, applications function normally ... it is just Explorer.

Really not wanting to wipe my system after I just spent a week getting it setup.

Solved!!!!!

Use 7zip.

open the 7zip file manager, go to the folder of the long name file, select the file, right click on it and select "rename".
erase some of the words of the file and press enter.
