Windows 10: File explorer search characters deleted while typing in windows 11

Hi Team, When I want to search my file in File Explorer I notice some of the characters are deleted. It only happens in the search File Explorer only.

Windows 10 Start Search issues - characters deleted while typing

Multiple users in our organization are having issues with the start menu search bar. When typing a search phrase, characters will often be deleted while typing or reappear after backspacing to correct a skipped letter.

It's a little difficult to describe without witnessing the behavior first-hand, but here is an example of what it might look like when a user searches for "startup apps." (displayed characters versus keyed characters)

If the user is watching the screen and notices the characters being deleted, it may require typing the same letter 3 or 4 times before it remains without being deleted. If they notice a skipped character and try to backspace, sometimes the deleted letter will reappear requiring multiple backspace attempts to remove a single letter from the search box before it stays deleted.

I haven't been able to find anyone online discussing this behavior or a proposed fix, but we have several computers coming into our help desk with this issue per week. Can anyone offer any suggestions to clear this issue? The issue only occurs in the start menu search box. No other apps have an issue with text deleting as the user types.

 

File search types in the Windows 10 file explorer search (using words)

Hi

I am trying to find out how I can search for specific files from the File Explorer.

So far, I have found out that you can search for files with specific names if you type "name:<name>" into the search input field.

Were can I find a list of the verbose search commands i.e. a list of the words+column character I should use to search files by other properties than their name?

For example, what should I type if I am trying to list files by file type:

filetype:<whatever>

or

type:<whatever>

or what?

I know that there is a Search toolbar, but I would like to just type the search into the search field to speed up the process. Also, I do not wish to use Cortana et al. I'd just like to use plain simple verbose search....

How do I search for the % character

As the name says, special characters are used for various special purposes, for instance the % sign you mentioned is used to mark environment variables. You can try it yourself to see how it works:

• Type %userprofile% on File Explorer addessbar, hit Enter to open your user folder
• Type %windir% on File Explorer addessbar, hit Enter to open Windows folder
• Type %localappdata% on File Explorer addessbar, hit Enter to open Users\Your_Username\Appdata\Local folder
• Type %appdata% on File Explorer addessbar, hit Enter to open Users\Your_Username\Appdata\Roaming folder

To search files and folders containing these special characters use filename:*X (filename followed by : and * plus the character you are searching) replacing X with actual character. For instance to find all files and folders with % sign in name, search for filename:*%.

To find all files and folders with string &Test in file / folder name search for filename:*&Test.
