    File explorer won't preview a file because it is in use.


    "This file cannot be previewed because it is in use." I see this in the preview pane of the File Explorer as soon as I click on the file, the contents flash in the panel and then is replaced with this message. Makes the preview pane quite useless. Note that it doesn't always happen, and isn't restricted to any particular file type. But once it starts to happen, then it continues for the rest of my session.

    For us to provide an accurate resolution, kindly elaborate the issue by answering the questions listed below:

    • Since when have you been experiencing this issue?
    • Were there any changes on your PC before this happened like software or updates installed?

    For initial troubleshooting, we suggest that you follow the steps listed below:

    • Open File Explorer.
    • Access this link

      C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
    • Delete all the files.
    • After deleting the files kindly try and see if there's a thumbnail preview of your files.

    Hi,

    Setting the Preview pane to show or hide in File Explorer will apply to all folders. If you wish to hide the Preview pane in File Explorer, we suggest that you follow the steps below:

    • Open File Explorer.
    • Tap on View tab.
    • Click Preview Pane to view/hide it.

    How to Disable Preview Pane in File Explorer

    Hello,

    Thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

    I would suggest you to try the steps and check if it helps.
    • Open File Explorer.
    • Click on View Tab.
    • Click on Preview Pane to view\hide it.
