Windows 10: File History backing up from cloud storage, not from laptop hard drive

I want to back up the files on my hard drive to a USB drive using File History . That USB drive has previous File History backups, but the files are backed up from Dropbox, not from my hard drive. What happens to the files on my hard drive if I delete the earlier File History backups on the USB drive to make room for a new backup?Thanks for your help.

Steve. Thanks for the info! Since re-setting the Options in FH seems to have fixed it, I plan to leave well enough alone. But will definitely try your suggestion if it quits working again.

On a more general question: Is there a better Auto Backup application than File History? I don't care about historical versions of any files - only current version in case my hard drive fails. I prefer it to be on my external hard drive (not cloud), and free is always good!

 

File History is not detecting the back up folders.

• Did you use File History to back up your files before re-installing Windows 10?
• If you've used File History to back up your files, what storage device did you use? Did you use an external hard drive or a network hard drive?
• Can File History detect the drive you've used to store the back up of your files?

File History does not recognize external hard drive since reformat

File History stopped backing up at some point (was a single file name too long for it?). I reformatted my external hard disk, a WD My Book. Now File History will not back up to it, despite it showing up in a list of possible external drives to back up to. I've tried using a free trial version of Backblaze too but it simply isn't backing up. Any suggestions?
