Windows 10: File History missing folders in "Restore" panel though they exist on the drive

I have three internal drives in my PC, one of which just failed.


I run daily File History backups and I wanted to simply restore the failed drive's folders to a new drive that replaced the failed one.


When manually checking the File History drive all of the data is there as I wanted.


The issue is that I want to restore from the restore interface so that I only get the latest version of all of the files, I don't want to sort through tons of redundant files, I also don't want to have the date extension on every file name.


When going to the Restore Interface under Backup Options > Restore Files from a Current Backup I see all of my system folders attached below



I am missing the folder for my D drive the one that failed and my E drive. In the photo below, the E drive included in the backup File History currently thinks it is the D drive because when my D drive failed it took that drive letter after I attached it.




Any help on how I can use the Restore interface to get my D drive's primary folder back would be awesome.

File History Restore Not Working

My apologies for my not explaining my problem clearly.

File History would always list my external drive. It would not list the File History backup subfolder, "Computer Name", which contained my backup.

I completed the 5 steps you recommended, and in step (4), using Windows Explorer, I opted to change the name to "File History.old" instead of deleting it. Had I deleted it, all my backup files that I want to reload onto drive C would have been gone.

When I look at the external backup drive in Windows Explorer it now shows 4 folders, $RECYCLE.BIN, FileHistory, FileHistory.old and System Volume Information. Bottom line, FileHistory contains only the backed up data currently on Drive C as a result of step
5, while FileHistory.old contains the data I wish to reload.

Now when I go to Control Panel/File History/Select drive, and select the external backup drive, only the subfolder contained in FileHistory shows up. The subfolder contained in FileHistory.old, which contains the data I wish to restore, is still not listed.
When I select "Restore personal files" it only shows folders associated with FileHistory.

Thanks for your attention and help, but I am now resigned to copying and pasting the files that I need to restore. I totally yield to the higher power that is Microsoft.

How to remove folders from File History

• I had the same problem, and I solved in this way:
  Control Panel -> System and Security-> File History -> Turn off
  Settings -> Update & Security -> Backup -> More options -> Stop using this drive
  Delete the File History folder in your external drive.
  Start using File History again.
  After performing these steps, I can easily add folders to "Excluded Folders" and they remain excluded. I checked in the actual files and folders saved on the external disk, and it works.
  I did not modify the default settings about how often and how long backup is saved, File History is working ok now. So I guess it is important to click "Stop using this drive" in order to reset File History.
