File History Not Working Properly, Too Slow

Hello! I recently bought a new laptop and have been attempting to transfer my files from the old to the new using file history. Using an external drive, I backed up my files on the old pc. I then set up the new PC, set up file history, and restore from a previous backup. Everything was fine, and it was going at various speeds between 1-100MB per second, which is about what I would expect. However, my new computer decided to crash midway through the process for no apparent reason, which I knew would stop the file history transfer. I opened the computer and tried to perform the process again, bu

  2. Is File History Working properly for some people?

Is file history working properly for you? If so please let me know.

If file history does work on some machines then I need to assume I have some problem other than a software bug.

File History on my machine does two things that render it useless. The issues have been posted here previously and they are:

    1. When I turn file history on I quickly get numerous ( 7 or more) backup copies of all the files that are designated to be backed up by file history. This includes files that have not been opened, or manipulated so they should not have multiple saved
    identical copies.

    2. File History selects a large list of folders to backup. I remove the undesired folders from the list and they are still backed up. I place the undesired folders in the exclude folders list and they are still backed up and they are added back on the
list of folders to back up by the program so that those folders appear on both the backup list and the exclude list.

Between the unwanted folders and multiple copies, I fill up a 2 TB drive in a matter of weeks.

    File History not working properly

After multiple hard drive formats, resets of File History configuration files, and general system maintenance overalls, File History still will not work properly.

    • It will switch on and make a backup to the selected internal HDD
    • Selected folders for backup are C:/Users/Me and the entire D: drive
    • Backup drive is F: which is bigger than the other two combined
    • It completes the backup and then sits idle, as expected
    • In the Restore personal files window, however, it just shows one item, my username folder, containing only two files: '.sambox' and 'Autorun'
    • In File Explorer I can navigate to the backup drive and see that it has backed up all the folders and files as requested
I think something's corrupt. I've tried running DISM RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow, etc., command lines with no unfixable corruption being reported.

Is there anything else I can try, before having to make a new user account, which I'm reluctant to do because I presume that means losing all the settings everywhere.

File History won't work, says insufficient space

    Hi,

It is possible that the user profiles are also being restored when restoring your files in
File History. We suggest that you manually choose the files you want to restore. Here are the steps:

    • Go to Control Panel.
    • Search for File History.
    • Click the Restore personal files option on the left pane of your screen.
    • Select the folders you want to restore and then click the restore icon.
Note: Make sure that you don't copy the duplicated folders listed.

Feel free to get back to us if you need further assistance.
