File History not working with internal backup drives.

I have been reading the MANY posts about File History not working. I have 4 different machines and have been trying to get it to work on each of them with no luck, including V 1809. I have started and set to Auto (Delayed Start) all of the services for Software Protection, Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup as stated in previous posts with no luck. I can run it manually by clicking Backup Now but no matter what interval of time I set, it will not perform an unattended backup. Since most of the other threads are old, I'm reposting this question with, hopefully, some new answers.

    :)

    File History does not work

I added a folder on a second internal drive (EFile History not working with internal backup drives. :) to File History, and now it will not work. I went to Backup Options and removed the folder from the "Back up these folders" list. I then took the following steps:

    • Stopped using my current back up drive (external USB).
    • Safely removed the external USB drive.
    • Rebooted my computer
    • Plugged in my external USB drive.
    • Start Backup

The folder on the E: drive reappears!

When I try to do a backup, it says that the backup has not completed. Indeed, there are no files stored on my external disk. The log give the error message, "Unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration
    C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config"

    Two questions:

    • How can I set File Restore back to its factory default settings?
    • Is there any way to get File Restore to backup my files from my second internal (EFile History not working with internal backup drives. :) disk to my external USB disk?

  3. File History drive

    Hi Joseph,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

I would like to inform you that if your File History drive has been disconnected for too long, or it doesn't have enough space to save temporary versions of your files. To continue saving copies of your files, you'll need to reconnect your File History drive.
Plug in your external File History drive or reselect your network. You can start a backup manually or wait for the next scheduled backup or reselect the drive. Here is the steps:

    To manually start a backup

    • Open File History by pressing Windows key> type File History
      > Click on File History.

    • Tap or click Back up now.

    To reselect your drive

    • Open File History by pressing Windows key> type File History
      > Click on File History.

    • Tap or click Select drive.

    • On the Select a File History drive page, tap or click your current drive or network location, and then tap or click
      OK.

Hope it helps. Let us know if you need more help and we'll be glad to assist.

File History not working with internal backup drives.

    File History Stopped Working...

I've searched this site and Google for the error I get and have found nothing that seems to pertain to this issue exactly. I have been using the file history backup function since installing W10 Home right before the free offer expired and it has been working fine. I was using an internal 250GB hard drive for the backup drive and it got fragmented and too full to defrag. I replaced the drive with a new out of the box 1TB internal drive and formatted it. The drive is shown to be healthy in Device Manager and I can access it fine. I've even copied a folder to it with no issues. I ran the file history set up steps to use this drive and there are the usual folders on it now. The Backup Options page in Settings shows the target drive, that there are no files backed up, and that backup has not been run. The When I try to run the backup to backup all of the folders specified in the setup, I get the following error message in a popup window:
"We can't copy files to your file history drive"
"Failed to initiate user data backup"
    (error 80070005)
I've tried several things, but nothing seems to work. I'm very ignorant on permissions, but puzzled that this worked fine until I changed drives, but I've obviously missed a step somewhere. Logs don't show anything relative to this issue.
