Windows 10: File History won't delete old backups

I have File History set to keep my backups for 3 months.However, it still does not delete them after 3 months, and this is taking up space.How do I get this feature to work?

File History never copies anything

Hi,

Temporary system failure is one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. To help resolve the issue, we suggest deleting the files in the USB drive. Follow the steps below:

• Open Settings > Update & Security > Backup > More Options.
  
• Click Stop using this drive.
  
• Delete the File History folder on your external drive.
  
• Try again to add the USB drive to backup File History.

The links you gave only refer to general information about deleting files or doing a disk clean up in windows.

This is not the problem I am having.

In File History, there is a setting called 'Until Space is needed'.

All the documentation I can find in this setting indicates that File History is supposed to automatically delete older File History data if my backup drive gets full, without me having to do some kind of manual delete or clean up process. This feature is
currently not working. File history will simply fill up my backup drive. When File history finds that my backup drive is full, File History is throwing an error complaining the disk is full. What it should do is delete older backups to make space for the
more recent data.

Again I ask is there another setting I need to change, or is File History broken in it's auto delete feature?

Can I delete current individual Document entries in File History and still have File History work properly for future listings and maintain my old listings?

Another tech forum said:
"File History keeps a database of all the files backed up. Since you manually deleted data in the File History folder (My Documents), the database and file store would be out of sync."

Do you agree?
