Windows 10: File Manager not responding

    Are you still facing the issue?

    Follow the steps and check if it helps:



    Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC on the keyboard.
    • Use the File, Run option in Task Manager to access the Command Prompt, type cmd and press Enter. Run the following command.

      dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    I would suggest you to check and install any latest Windows Updates available.


    • Go to Start and then Settings.

    • Click Update and Recovery

    • Check for updates under Windows Updates.

  3. Task Bar, Task manager and apps, all not responding, Windows 10

    step 1 worked a dream. Had earlier tried everything suggested in these forums. nothing had worked to solve the problem. The media creation tool as suggested in step 1 did the trick. - it took several hours, but worth it.

    ps. original complaint - non responding - and task manager - blank or useless.

    I understand that you are facing issues with File Explorer on your PC. For further clarity on the issue, please respond to the questions below:



    1. Which build version of Windows 10 are you using currently?
    2. Are you aware of any changes made to the PC prior to which you weren’t facing this issue?
    3. When exactly do you receive the File Explorer not responding error?


    Refer the article Which version of Windows operating system am I running?



    Meanwhile, I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and see if that helps.



    Method 1:



    Try running the troubleshooter for File Explorer and see if that helps. Refer the article

    Automatically diagnose and repair Windows file and folder problems




    Method 2:



    Perform Clean Boot on the PC and check if File Explorer is working fine. Refer the article

    How to perform a clean boot in Windows




    Performing a clean boot will start the computer with minimal set of drivers and programs, to determine whether a background program is causing the issue. Some of the Startup programs will not load after performing a clean boot on the computer.
    However, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after finishing the troubleshooting.




    If the File Explorer is working fine after performing Clean Boot, then please refer the section
    How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot
    to identify the root cause of the issue.
