Windows 10: File names in Left Panel of File Explorer

A brief apology: I'm probably too old to mess with this stuff (pulling 80,) but I like to try. Please be patient with me, and ask for details if I am not stating my problem clearly. I have searched, but could not find this problem already discussed in this forum.
I just installed Windows 10. Not sure if I like it, but I'm trying hard.
Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?

File Explorer has gone crazy after last nights upgrade.

My only has icons instead of full descriptions. I can not get back to a point where I have tabs that actually say something. Please tell me how to get my view repaired? help... Help.... HELP!!!

I have been thrashing around trying the suggestions given above. To first answer your request for information, I use an HP Pavilion laptop with Windows 10 installed and use a wireless mouse. This problem only appears when using the File Explorer but not
many other applications I use involve more than 1 screen at a time. Some suggestions of what to do given above or linked to those given above suggest major technical fix methods I am not willing to do at this time. One is to change my Microsoft user account
which I don't know how to do and fear many implications from doing this if I did. Another suggestion is to perform a clean boot which seems scary enough for me not to venture there. 2 methods I tried which didn't solve the problem were: to stop and restart
the File Explorer using task manager and 2nd to use the system file checker to scan and fix any corrupted files. None were found to be corrupted.

 

No one has even a suggested answer?

 

I have never seen the "loose files" expanded on the left side in any version. It's always just shown the "folders" as far as I can remember. You click on a folder in the left pane to open it and view its contents (that viewing happens in the right pane).

 

I don't believe that files were ever shown in the left panel in any version of Windows. This is only for container objects such as folders.

 

I have only seen folders and .ZIPs and .ZIPs were a relatively recent add. I don't recall Win95 having that.
