Windows 10: File properties being lost on picture files DNG

I have an issue where DNG picture files do not have Thumbnail - just standard default icon.I have deleted Thumbnail cache, increased size of Cache and rebuilt ... no change.Files with or without Thumbnails import happily into Adobe Lightroom and can be used without error.The issue seem limited to Explorer view.In order to test I copied 2 x DNG files with Thumbnails and 2 without Thumbnails to a USB drive to test on another W10 PC, the ones without Thumbnails did not copy correctly ....I get the following message for each file without a Thumbnail

If I go to a Windows 10 folder - all of the jpeg files have a thumbnail (as do png, tiff etc)
Very few DNG files will have a thumbnail (usually none)
As folders may have hundreds of files - the thumbnail view is essential to quickly find files without having to open everyone.

Sometimes if I keep folder window open (active) for a long time (more than 40 mins) a few of DNG files may change from default icon, to a block of colour then to thumbnail …. Sample pic attached:





I have installed Microsoft raw image Extension .... v3 no difference

I Have followed the steps to use CMD prompt to delete the Thumbnail Cache, increase Cache to 4MB, and restart Explorer to rebuild Cache ... all jpeg thumbnails rebuild (slowly) but not DNG.



Interesting additional observation -

My phone creates DNG files direct .. my camera has to have files converted using Adobe DNG converter.
Just did a test and showed something I had not realised before.

Picture taken with Phone - File saved to Desktop as native DNG ..... and it has the correct thumbnail.

When I move file to a subfolder of My_Pictures it arrives there without a thumbnail, default icon.



Did a 2nd test took RAW picture with my camera - File saved to Desktop as native RW2

Used Adobe DNG Converter to convert RW2 to DNG, File saved to Desktop as DNG … but it does not have a thumbnail. However if I open the file, it then does create a Thumbnail instead of icon.

Again when I move file to a subfolder of My_Pictures it arrives there without a thumbnail, default icon.

 

.DNG files in Windows 10 (2018 update)

So, I'm having problems opening .DNG files from my Leica on my windows surface pro 3 running windows 10 1803. Double clicking on the file opens the Windows Photo app, and you see a brief flash of the "full size" photo then it ends up with what looks like
a low resolution thumbnail. Zooming on the final opened picture ends up with a very blurry photo.

Resetting the app (settings->apps->apps and features->advanced->reset) shows the blurry photo fit to the window (instead of a tiny thumbnail) but then when you close or double click on a .DNG again, it goes back to the previous issue, which means you see
a flash of the photo fitted to the app window, then it scales down to a thumbnail. At no point do you ever see a high resolution photo.

Opening the file (35MB) in Adobe Photoshop express or Lightroom gives you the high resolution photo.

Clearly, there's an issue with handling the .DNG file from the camera with the photo app. The only current solution is to download Adobe's DNG Converter 10.3 (available here: https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/detail.jsp?ftpID=6321) then "convert" the DNGs
to a DNG with a JPG preview, but this removes the ability to preview the photo in file explorer with the "large icons" setting. You see a regular photo file extension style icon, but if you double click, the file will come up in windows photo with a high
resolution photo.

Bottom line, how can I get *both* features? I'd like to get the preview of the photo in file explorer *and* high resolution photo in Microsoft photo. Or, should we just abandon the Microsoft photo app? Any suggestions?

I would like to ask if the option to keep files and settings was selected at the time of roll back to previous version.

Also, some files may be hidden. So, I suggest you to check the size of the drive where the photos were saved. If the files are hidden, suggest you to follow the steps provided below:

• Right click on Start icon and select Command Prompt (Admin).
• Type/ (copy & paste) the below command line.

Attrib –h –r –s /s /d D:*.* (Replace the letter ”D” with the drive letter where the photos were saved)

Check if the photos are available.

For the ID picture on sign-in, can set it again by following the steps below:

• Go to PC Settings.
• Click on Accounts.
• In the right pane, click on Browse under Add a Picture.
• Select the desired picture and click on OK.
