Windows 10: File properties issue, Details automatically deleted.

Hi, apologies if in the wrong area.

I've updated Windows to the latest version recently, and when changing file properties on mp3's (as I do) what tends to happen is if I want to even capitalise a letter (i for I) or change a year in the file properties, ALL the information in the file is deleted when I click "apply" for no reason whatsoever, and I don't know why.

Is there a reason why this is happening? (Because it's really annoying, to say the least.)

I went with the free "Mp3tag" program. It's easy to use and let me fill in the blanks on my podcast files.

Hi, how are you trying to change the tags? What are you using?

Try mp3tag (free/donationware) and see if you can change the tags with that.

I can change tags in the Details Pane of explorer, and in Properties, Details sheet; in principle there shouldn't be a problem, but there was a thread recently reporting something very similar to your experience- you could have a look for that.

Yeah i've been using Windows 10 for it all the time - just right clicking on it, going into properties and changing the details there.

On the older build of Windows 10, it's never been an issue at all, it's just on this new one it just brazenly deletes everything, even after changing the simplest of things in the details panel. Any link to other threads with this issue?

 

Like you, I'd have to search the forum. There was one within the last 3 or 4 weeks I think.

I use a very useful free program (File Metadata) that adds to the standard range of fields exposed by explorer by using Windows capabilities- just adds to the relevant keys in the registry, so this is not a fair comparison:



- here you can see I've added Text text successfully. However, doing it this way required admin permission.

I'm wondering if you have UAC off, and whether that might be significant?

If your default for (e.g.) mp3's is Windows Media Player or Groove, then editing items in Properties, Details, works. If not, it doesn't.

What is your default music player?

 

More: if I use File Metadata as shown, I can have VLC player as default, and edit details in the Details Pane and Properties. It also makes more fields accessible. It's an interesting add-on and a good read on the site as to its background and MS thinking.
