File Share on networked PC asks for credentials

I can access shared folders from Windows 10, but it requires credentials. I have password protection turned off, so I don't know why it's asking for this. I entered credentials that I happen to remember, and I'm able to sign in. Where are these credentials, and why is it asking for them?

    :)

Asking to enter network credentials when access files on network

    Hi Steve,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that after an update, you get a prompt to enter network credentials to access files over network. I’ll certainly help you with the issue.

Ideally, if you have never used credentials to access files over network, you may want to check the network settings and see if Password protected sharing is turned off. To do this, refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Go to control panel > Click on
      network and internet >
      Click on network and sharing.
    2. Click on Change advance sharing settings
      on the left pane.
    3. Turn off password protected sharing.
    4. Click on Save changes

Let us know how it goes.

Problem sharing files and Network Credentials error

Hello dalchina, thank you for responding with your suggestions and links. I've been kinda sidelined by life here recently and haven't had the time to devote to my laptop issues. But I have been reading your links and the related threads and trying to formulate a path to follow. My thoughts are to put my effort into solving the "Network Credentials Expired" error, in hopes that if I'm successful, I'll reestablish contact with the shared folders on my PC. If I can do that, I'll live with all the mess I created changing a bunch of settings I probably didn't need to change. If I'm not successful, I'll probable just reset the laptop back to factory settings by re-installing windows. It's only 3 weeks old and I've only installed a couple programs which I can easily reinstall. With the laptop back to default settings, I'll follow the tutorials for networking, file sharing and hopefully I can turn off the network credentials setting so this won't happen again.
Thank you again for your time and help, I'll post again when I get a final outcome.

Hello dalchina, thank you again for your help. I have fixed my "network credentials password error". It was actually a pretty easy fix. I followed one of your links and read about windows credentials manager issues. I started looking and saw some things that didn't look quite right. So I deleted all of the credentials listed in the credential manager in my laptop and my PC and listed my laptop IP address and name, password on my PC and my PC IP address and name, password on my laptop and it worked. I'll continue to read up on the networking and sharing tutorials and might go in and check if I should change any other settings. But for now it has been successful. thanks again

  4. File Share on networked PC asks for credentials

Windows 10 User Credentials asked for during file share between PCs on same network.

I recently did a full format on an old PC in my house, I use file share between all my sub PCs and my main PC. However after I configured all the settings like I did every time before now it keeps asking me for user credentials to share files between PCs
even though I have password protected sharing turned off. I am sure its something simple that I missed but any help would be great.

These are the steps I was given from Microsoft Support.

Windows 10 no longer supports Home Group, but there's another way to set up File sharing which is called "Network Sharing" and here you have the steps on how to do it:

    I. Open the services application on the PC and start & enable the following:

    a. Function Discovery Provider Host (FDPHost)?

    b. Function Resource Publication (FDResPub)?

    c. Network Connections (NetMan)? Network list service

    d. SSDP Discovery (SSDPSRV)?

    e. UPnP Device Host (UPnPHost)?

    f. Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRPSvc)?

    g. Peer Networking Grouping (P2PSvc)?

    h. Peer Networking Identity Manager (P2PIMSvc)?

II. Navigate to Control Panel> Network & Internet> Network & Sharing center> Advanced sharing settings> Make sure that all the sharing options are turned on.

III. Make sure both PCs are connected to the same router.

After some trouble shooting, I realized all of my PC's had set my router setting to public thus turned all sharing off due to firewall protections so.

IV. Go to Network & Sharing center and make sure you are in fact on a private network.
