File sharing between Windows 10 pro and Windows XP professional not working on network

I am struggling when trying to access my OLD Windows XP Professional file system from my NEW Windows 10 Pro system and I've tried a bunch of things. First, exact configurations:

OLD: Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 2. Computer name: GATEWAY Workgroup: WORKGROUP

NEW: Windows 10 Pro version 1903 OS Build 18362.1016. 64-bit. Device Name: Leon-2ndT570 Workgroup: WORKGROUP

I see the systems in the network.

On the OLD system I see Leon-2ndT570 under My Computer/My Network Places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network. When I click on it the following error is displayed: \\Leon-2ndT570 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

On the NEW system I see GATEWAY under Network in File Explorer. When I click on it, I get a Windows Security dialog to Enter network credentials. Enter your credential to connect to GATEWAY. I enter the username and passwords both just with the user name and the \\Leon-2ndT570\username and \\GATEWAY\username formats. I always get "The username or password is incorrect" errors.

    Some things I've done:

    • created matching accounts, with identical usernames and passwords on both systems.
    • enabled SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support on the new system SMB 1.0/CIFS Client
    • enabled remote desktop on both my OLD and NEW systems and have connected that way.
    • tried accessing my NEW system files through explorer... \\Leon-2ndT570 in address. I get the following: Windows cannot find \\Leon-2ndT570 Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking on the Start button and then clicking Search

    :)

Windows 7 & XP Networking Problem

I have two PCs in my room connected to a Linksys router, both had Windows 7 on them and had file sharing enabled through the Homegroup feature. Now I have XP on one PC, and still Windows 7 on the other. I setup the network on my XP PC and had the Windows 7 PC setup properly so that they could network together.

In 'My Network Places' I can see both PC's listed, I can double click the Windows 7 PC from my Windows XP PC and see the folders that I have set to share, but when I double click any of the folders I get an error message saying "\\PC-2\MP3 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied.

However, on my Windows 7 PC, I can go to network and browse all of the files I have set to share on the XP PC. So what do I need to do so that I can access the files on my Windows 7 PC on my Windows XP PC?

  3. Windows 7 Professional & Windows XP Pro Networking

Hell, I am new to TPU forums so bear with me *Smile File sharing between Windows 10 pro and Windows XP professional not working on network :). We had a time clock program that we used on Windows XP Pro that required the Data folder of the program (in program files) to be shared (by the host computer) and mapped to (by the client computers). We are now using 3 Windows 7 PC's and 2 Windows XP PC's. The Host Computer (Server) for this program is now on a Windows 7 machine, I am able to share the directory and map to it on the other 2 Windows 7 machines. My problem is I can see the directory on the 2 Windows XP machines but the XP machines won't allow me into the folder...access denied, make sure you have permission.

As I said i'm new to the TPU forums (although I have been watching this site for a long time now) I will be greatful for any help anyone can provide. (Let me know if you need any more info)

Windows 7 Professional & Windows XP Pro Networking

I went into advanced sharing and set the share to EVERYONE with full read/write permissions & also shared the folder on the network. I can access the folder and do what I need to on the other Windows 7 PC's just not the Windows XP ones. This program was used the same way before, just that the "server computer" was one of the XP machines. When it was done this way i could access the folder on all computers (XP & Windows 7).

On another note the reason i'm even changing this in the first place is that the newest Windows 7 computer we have is the new "main" computer.

Thanks for all the help so far *Smile File sharing between Windows 10 pro and Windows XP professional not working on network :)
