Windows 10: file system problems for non-MS Apps

It appears that the latest Windows 10 64-bit update [2019-12-11] resulted in file system access problems for some of the non-Microsoft Apps I'm running, notably Mailbird and Calibre.


Cannot save email attachments from Mailbird error message: file not found. If I use the default Microsoft Mail program I can save the attachments.


Cannot add to or update the Calibre database CantOpen error


Has anyone else experienced this, and have you found a solution?

Program to open non MS standard CAB files?

Does anybody here know how to open non MS standard CAB files? E.g. game installer disks with CAB files couldn't be opened with winRAR or winzip... Is there another app to open this files?

Googling linked me to 7zip but I doesn't open it too. *Frown

Non-Store Default Apps for a file protocol in windows 10

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to follow the below steps.

1) Right click on the file and select choose another app to open. It will display the list of apps to open.

2) If the app is not listed then select more apps and check if you can find it.

Windows 10 1709 System Restore problems...


That seems to be an attempt at Option 2 in the tutorial, which requires you to
a. Boot to a command prompt (Did you?)
b. You then seem to be mixing steps 3,4 and 5, thus your command is incorrect.

I suggest Option 1 is easier.

If you still have problems, please repost listing each specific step and saying which option from the tutorial you are using. Thanks.
