Files all downloaded but last part of setup failed

Hi. I was invited to download/install Windows 10 and I followed all the steps to download the files. Then I clicked to install it and it seemed to be doing it. Windows closed down and the computer restarted, but when it opened again it was still Windows 7 and there was a box up relating to Windows upgrades that that said the 'latest upgrade' had failed, and there was a button to click to download Windows 10 if I wanted to (again?!). I don't know where all the files are that were downloaded and what I should do. I saw a suggestion somewhere that firewall/antivirus software can be a problem. I have Bitdefender, that doesn't allow you to disable it.. I suppose I could remove it completely before trying again? But otherwise what should I do? I don't want to download a lot of duplicate files again.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    :)

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the description, I understand that you are facing some issues installing Windows 10.

I would suggest you to refer to the Microsoft Help Article given below and check if that helps.

Disclaimer: Antivirus software helps protecting your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable/Uninstall your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install
other software and\or troubleshoot any pertinent issue, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to malware attacks.

Disclaimer: A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program
in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot. You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality
when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or experience the original behavior if the problem still exists. If the computer is connected to a network,
network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps.

Once you perform clean boot do refer to the section “How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting”
to boot the computer in normal mode.

Hope this information helps. Please let us know if you need any other assistance with Windows in future. We will be happy to assist you.

There must be a way to temporarily disable Bitdefender, almost all antivirus have this option, take a deeper look into the user help.

Thanks, but there doesn't seem to be. I suppose I could uninstall it. But on their website Bitdefender says there shouldn't be any problem with installing Windows 10.. Like I said the installation was all apparently happening, including it restarting and saying it was installing the updates, 50% finished, 60% finished etc, and then it just opened up and didn't look any different to normal (ie. still Windows 7) and there was a panel with a link about recent updates that said it had failed.. I have tried twice now, same result. Bored of it. I'm not especially technical and don't see why you have to be to install this new upgrade, it's annoying.

And I don't know if I have some large files now taking up space on my computer somewhere from the downloads I did in connection with this?

Well that could be one of the reason you could not finalize the upgrade process, though you should have seen the warning about the free space required, take a look at your C unit, if you have enough space and you want to upgrade and want to try to temporarely disable BT here is a link.

W10 is a good OS with lot of improvements in the UI and in the core engine, but if you feel comfortable with your present OS just forget it and go on with it until you think it's the right time for upgrading.

What I meant about large files though was is there a lot of stuff on my computer now from what it downloaded in order to supposedly do the upgrade (that failed to do anything)? If so I'm not sure where they'd be, so as to delete them and free up space again. I don't think space on my hard drive was an issue in doing the upgrade because, like you say, I didn't get any error messages about that.

in W7 there should be a folder within the Windows you'll find the large installer file stashed in a hidden folder called C:\$Windows.~BT, in a subfolder called Sources.you'll find the large installer file stashed in a hidden folder called C:\$Windows.~BT, in a subfolder called Sources.
