Windows 10: Files are nowhere to be found after signing into a temporary account in Windows 10

Files are lost after I unknowingly signed into a temporary account after signing out and in. The files are gone from the system and returned to me the storage space it used from 50Gb left to 82Gb left, there were a lot of files lost, especially college school works. I have cut and pasted the files and not copy pasted. Any fixes for this? Old posts doesn't really give a specific answer and right now I'm using a recovery tool to hopefully recover all the files. Any answer would be appreciated.

Hello,

If you verified that the account is temporary, kindly restart your PC and sign in again. This should remove the temporary account and your files and settings should be available again.

Notes:

• You might need to restart your PC more than once before you can see your files and settings again.
• You should back up everything you worked on to an external drive, or it will be deleted when you sign out of the temporary account.

If that didn't help, we suggest performing the suggestion posted by Vijay B in this
thread and see if it makes any difference.

• When you say temporary, is it a local account or a Microsoft account?
• What error do you get when you try to access the files?

I suggest you to check how many accounts are present on the PC.

1. Try to open User Accounts and check if you have any other account.

2. Open Run (type run in Search or Press Windows Logo Key+X. Click on Run). Type netplwiz and Click OK. You will see the list then try to log into administrator account.

If it is a Microsoft account, then try the steps provided in the link below.

To assist you better, let us know from which version of Windows you upgraded to Windows 10? Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 update?

I suggest you to refer to below link on “find lost files after upgrading to Windows 10” and go to the option
Check to see if you’re signed in with a temporary profile.

I also suggest you to create a new user account and check if it helps.

Please follow the below mentioned steps to create a new user account:

  Press Windows logo key +
  I key to open Settings.
  
• 
  Select Accounts, click on
  Family & other people in the left pane.
  
• 
  Under Other users, select
  Add someone else to this PC.
  
• 
  Enter a name for the new account. If you wish create a password, and verify the password, add a password hint, then select

  Select Finish.
  

Note: As you are logged in temporary profile be sure to copy everything you worked on to an external drive/flash drive because it will be deleted when you sign out.
