    Files deleted on old disk

    Hi All,

Long time last visit 18 Aug 2015 23:19 Slartybart Re installing 4 tb drive.....

For those that remember...I took out the 1 tb drive from my HP pavilion 23 that was running windows 10 it was fully working apart from not a lot of room left due to mainly photos, docs etc., and swapped with the above 4 tb drive which I needed help with all still working fine........

Today I thought that I would update the windows 10 on it, I took out the 4 tb and replaced with the old 1 tb drive, it started up OK with windows 10, but nothing else, all my old photos and docs all gone....I was keeping this as a backup...
Silly question..Does Windows 10 delete all files if not used?? if not where I my files??? Window.old is still there if I changed this back would I get all my photos etc. back??

    Thanks Len..*Sad

    :)

  3. Disk Cleanup and windows old folder issues

I currently have Windows 10 home Build 10586-updated from Windows 8.1. Disk cleanup wont let me deleted the windows old files. The files have been in my system as old as 10/30/15. The last time it modified was on 12/27/15. As you can plainly see the window
old files should have automatically deleted by now. I checked disk cleanup and the OLD temporary files are deleted but the rest arent. Your help in this matter is apprectiated.

Windows doesn't delete unused user files - in normal operation.
No, Windows.old is not a backup of your user files. It's there to revert the OS (not your user files) to the old version if necessary.

Did you copy or move your user files from the 1Tb to the 4Tb?

Have you actually logged in as the same user - assuming your files were in the default library folders, that is.

A far far better way to back up your system, data, everything is to use disk imaging routinely.
And there are many excellent ways to back up key data.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes I did disk copy (clone) the files to the new disk. We talked about this with Bill when I wanted to put the new disk in.. The clone went fine and the 1tb drive booted ok after and all files were there..
Yes logged in the same way I got into the disk straight away as same user name and password..
I had already backed my files up to my WD cloud...So was not worried I have not lost anything.....
Just seems strange that my 1TB drive photos etc have been deleted on the other 2 partitions..as I say the win10 on the c: drive was fine, apart from no user files none of my desktop files... Just like a new copy had been put on, hence asking about the windows.old..

    Thx Len

It may be you've somehow fallen foul of one of the Windows oddities about viewing disks/partitions... perhaps that's an older version of Windows - 1607 took a while for that to seemingly be fixed (I think).

If you've got backups, that's great. Not worth spending time on, I'd guess.

Nothing lost, so only curiosity left to satisfy. It could be that the partitions are still there, but have lost their drive letters. Have a look in Disk Management?

    Files deleted on old disk

    Thanks dalchina and Bree

Not sure what has happened drive letters still there, yes as I said I have backups, but still like to find out what has caused the problem...I have just tried Recuva from ccleaner and don't you know I can recover files that have been deleted..So they are still there..Not going to bother recovering them all as I have the backup.. More a case of a warning if anyone else has a drive stacked away, are there files still there... It's like the drive has had a clean install..Weird to say the least..

    Anyway thanks for your help...
