Windows 10: Files getting deleted after update.

For some reason whenever my laptop updates it will delete recent files and downloads even though I have enough storage to hold them. My background image and my files will reset and whenever I try to back it up it won't bring up any file. I tried scanning for any malware and viruses but defender keeps indicating that nothing is wrong. This has happened twice and I tried deleting all the files that I don't need. Is there any way to fix it or prevent it from happening?

May we know what type of file are you trying to delete? Would it be Office documents, media files, or picture files? If you're trying to delete files for free some space on your device. We suggest to perform a Disc Cleanup. Kindly follow the steps below to
perform the task:

• Type in Cortana Disc Cleanup
  
• Choose the files to delete
  
• Click on "Clean up system files"
  
• Click on Ok

Unable to delete temporary files

To delete temporary files, kindly follow these steps:

• Press the Windows key to launch the Start menu.
• Type in Disc cleanup and press Enter.
• Under Files to delete, select the file types to get rid of. To get a description of the file type, select it.
• Select OK.

If you need to free up more space, you can also delete system files:

• Press the Windows key to launch the Start menu.
• Type in Disc cleanup and press Enter.
• In Disk cleanup, select Clean up system files.
• Select the file types to get rid of. To get a description of the file type, select it.
• Select OK.

Delete and Cut Files with Preview Pane Open

• Have you tried to delete the pdf file in preview panel?
• What exactly happens when try to delete the pdf file?

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

  Open File Explorer.

  Select View and click on preview panel.
  
• 
  Select the pdf file.
  
• 
  At the right corner you will be able to see preview panel.
  
• 
  You can right click on it and delete the files.
