Windows 10: Finally, an *actual* solution to 0x800703f1 errors in Windows Update besides reinstall

I've been battling this issue for ages now with various Windows installs, and if you search for solutions, it's a gigantic list of useless advice--often boilerplate responses--that starts with suggestions to reset Windows Update, perform a clean/safe mode reboot, disable AV smh, etc. and inevitably results in either a Windows reinstall or no response and now, many questions here are no longer accepting replies. To be sure, resetting Windows Update does help in some cases, but as one retired thread shows 635 people say "I have the same question", that's not solving it in many, many cases. T

Windows 10 Update Center gives me error 0x800703f1


For the last month and a half I've been getting error 0x800703f1 while trying to update Windows 10 Pro x64 (KB3105210, KB3087040, KB3106932 and the new Treshold 2 to be exact). Manual installation failed at Step 2. I tried EVERYTHING. From SFC to DISM, from Deleting stuff in SoftwareDistribution to using Windows Update troubleshooter. NOTHING helped. Is there any way to fix this without having to reinstall my entire OS because I have some valuable information on my PC which I DON'T want to lose. I really would appreciate if someone would help me out here

 

Lumia 540 upgrade is showing an error code 0x800703f1

Finally, resolved the error code "0x800703f1" and installed Windows 10 in my new branded Lumia 540.

After a lot of searching for this error code, got an idea that error code is related to a registry entry which blocks the upgrade. Referred link: How to fix update Error Code 0x800703f1 on Windows 10?

Suggested solution was to format and install windows 10.

Searching for the answer "How to format Windows mobile" I got a solution that using "Windows Phone Recovery Tool" we can reset and reinstall the OS again in mobile.

So, downloaded "Windows Phone Recovery Tool" from the link: Download Windows Phone Recovery Tool by Microsoft

Install "Windows Phone Recovery Tool" in your machine and connect windows phone to the machine. Recovery tool will automatically identifies the mobile model and starts downloading the OS. (1.66 GB file will be downloaded). Once the download completes, the
tool will ask for confirmation and install the OS to mobile. Believe it will be a fresh install (not equivalent to Hard / Soft Reset). Post that it will show the setup steps to start with the OS. Now the OS is reinstalled.

Now follow the steps in the link that explains Windows 10 upgrade using "Upgrade Advisor" app (How to update your older Windows Phone to Windows 10 Mobile)

The above solution worked for me and upgraded my Lumia 540 to Windows 10.
