Windows 10: fingerprint readers

Hi, I want to install a fingerprint reader to replace numerous passwords but don't know which model to buy and what problems might arise. I have only basic knowledge of the technicalities of computers. I operate on Windows 10.

Can i use External Fingerprint reader to use Windows Hello in Windows 10.

I have a question of Windows Hello Fingerprint readers I was wanting to know if I buy an external fingerprint reader will that fingerprint reader work with Windows Hello? Please respond ASAP I want to get more advanced tech for my PC!

Fingerprint log-in does not function with Windows Hello using Windows 10 on a Dell Latitude E7450 equipped with a built-in Fingerprint Reader.
Technique used to scan fingerprint is resting finger on reader, momentarily pausing, and then moving finger upward.

Problem started when using Settings to add fingerprint of index and middle finger of right hand - reader did not recognize fingerprints.
Contacted Dell for assistance to replace reader and update driver. New reader finally recognized fingerprints after multiple attempts to add fingerprints.

After fingerprints were added, only a few log-ins have been successful using fingerprints.
Most attempts to log-in with fingerprints lead to messages prompting me to clean reader and/or require log in with PIN after too many unsuccessful attempts. Cleaning the new reader with a dry cloth did not help.



Please let me know tips for using Finger Print Reader to log in from Windows Hello.

While I'm not answering your specific question you might want to also investigate Password Managers. These are software solutions to managing passwords. You remember one very secure password to enter the vault. Some products have automation so they can handle keying. Some use cloud solutions to sync your vault across platforms and some even carry note sections so you can record pesky security questions or URL's to take you to login pages.

Different people have different opinions of using the cloud for this purpose, I won't wade into that debate.

If you use one of these products ensure you back up the vault regularly. I use one and my digital life is within.

Unless you live with a bunch of roommates like in a dorm, they can be useful but in your own house, I would say that they are overkill.

 

I use mine all the time and because it is with me everywhere I always have access., even when I travel.

Can't tell you how many times the people I visit have their passwords everywhere or a book sitting on the desk beside them with scratchings that they swear they're going to organize.

 

Well you obviously have a Laptop.
