Firefox Hardware Report: Windows 10 on rise as Windows 7 is trending down

Back in 2016, Mozilla launched its Hardware Report. In the report, the non-profit organization details the type of hardware Firefox clients are using. Firefox hardware report is transparent and public, and anyone can access it.

The non-sensitive data that Mozilla collected from Firefox desktop browsers’ Telemetry system has revealed that Windows 10 is now the most used OS. In October 2018 hardware report, Mozilla notes that Windows 7 and Windows 10 are the most popular operating systems “accounting for almost 80% of our users”.

The report also notes that Windows 10 market share is trending up but Windows 7 is still doing strong. The chart revealed that Windows 10 share is 40.696 percent and Windows 7 has 40.401 of market share on the Firefox platform.

“Windows 7 and Windows 10 are the most popular operating systems, accounting for almost 80% of our users. Although Windows 7 is trending down and Windows 10 is trending up, the older version still hangs on to the top spot,” Mozilla explains.

    StatCounter and NetMarketShare stats

A report by StatCounter revealed that Windows 10 overtook Windows 7 back in February but the Rival monitoring service NetMarketShare disagrees.

According to StatCounter, Windows 10 market share is 51.96 percent and it’s growing rapidly. On the other hand, NetMarketShare data shows that Windows 10 is only now getting close to overtaking Windows 7.

  2. New Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox

Anyone who uses Windows Vista and Mozilla Firefox may be pleased to hear that the Windows Media Player team has now released a plugin for Firefox that should allow the browser to play WMP content on websites. Here are the steps to get it working:
    • Installation of the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin may require administrative access to your PC. It is recommended that you close all other open browser windows before continuing with the installation.
    • Click the Install button to automatically download and install the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin.
    • Depending on your security settings, you may see a Security Warning dialog box. Click Install to install the plugin.
There is a known issue if you are using Firefox version 2.0.0.3 on Windows Vista with the installer failing with error code -203. To work around this simply restart Firefox (you will get a notification that Windows Vista will be changing the Firefox compatibility settings) and then install again - the second time should succeed.

The download is available here, and the new plugin works on all versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista (although it is mostly intended for Vista, as that currently has no WMP support in Firefox).

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Installing Windows 10 using Windows 7 key

Nope, you need to install Windows 10 first and make sure the Windows 7 key is transferred to your Windows account after you've installed Windows 10 (not quite sure how that works). I missed the last step and I could not activate Windows 10 after a re-install... Microsoft seem to have done everything they can to make it a PITA. Also, it's technically too late to do this now anyhow, as the upgrade offer has expired. But KMSPico works quite well...

As for getting rid of Windows, delete the Windows folder.
