  1. Firewall rules - a lot are defined 2 times

    Hello,

For the first time, I look at the rules of the win 10 firewall and I see a lot of rules 2 times. Some are for win services, and some for programs I've installed. ( see pictures )

Firewall rules - a lot are defined 2 times b64d4b23-17c3-46a4-970d-2a8a0d7ae973?upload=true.png Firewall rules - a lot are defined 2 times f77fa4ee-36a5-42d7-aefa-e7aac841570f?upload=true.png

I've made an exportation of the strategy from the menu to have a backup of the actual configuration.

    - 1) Can I delete duplicate rules one by one ? Or is it better to restore the default strategy from the menu and add the rules for my programs again after ?

For information, the " diagnostic / reparation " tool n the menu didn't find errors ...

I suppose that rules are added with windows update and the old rules stay in the firewall... Same when I update my programs ...

    - 2) Is it a normal behavior of the Win 10 firewall to keep the old rules?

    - 3) If yes, is it possible to avoid that , and if yes, how ?

    Regards.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Firewall won't keep my inbound/outbound rules

    Hi,

I realize the inconvenience caused to you regarding the Windows Firewall. I will certainly assist you.

I suggest you to restart the Windows firewall service and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps for the same.

    • Press Windows key + R simultaneously for Run.
    • Type services.msc and then Enter.
    • Right click on the Windows firewall services and then restart the services and check if it helps.
If the issue still persists then I suggest you to remove and then read the Windows fire wall rule.

Hope this information is helpful. Please get back to us with the information required, if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.

firewall rule to block addresses NOT on an IP list?

I am just starting to learn the Windows Firewall (working on both Windows 7 and 10) and I'm not impressed with the inflexibility of its rules. I would like to know if

    1. Is there is a way to do what I want with Windows Firewall?
    2. Is there is a third-party firewall that would do it?

What I want to do is create a rule that blocks outgoing connections, for program X, that are to a destination **NOT** in an IP list.

Windows Firewall is not very flexible in how you specify IP list rules. When you give an IP list, your rule will match that list... you can't say "trigger the rule for non-matching IP addresses." Therefore to allow outgoing connections to a list, you have to

    1. Change the entire firewall policy to block outgoing connections by default so that you can create an "allow rule" matching your list. This will mess up the rest of your programs.

    2. Somehow combine a block rule and allow rule. Create a block rule for most traffic, with the "allow" rule overriding it when appropriate. However, this doesn't appear to be possible in general. It **may** be possible for connections that use IPSec, I'm not sure. And I'm not sure if I can use IPSec in my application.

And is there a third-party firewall that can do it? Most 3rd-party firewalls are LESS sophisticated than Windows Firewall, because the use case they are addressing is providing an interface that doesn't require much comprehension. I need one that's actually MORE sophisticated than Windows Firewall.

Firewall rules - a lot are defined 2 times

the system adds inbound firewall exceptions and modifies user-defined settings

Thank you in advance for your help! please ask me missing information, this is new to me this kind of on-line community.

problem: to stop the event described bellow

    event description:
this event repeats. it is not triggered directly by me. inbound/outbound firewall exceptions are added and settings I define are modified. settings include "visibility effects" (icon fade, animate, other gui options, etc).

    more details:

    1) "visibility effects" -- are listed in window "system properties" -> "advanced" -> "performance options", include such properties as "fade or slide menus into view"

    2) example of a firewall inbound / outbound rule that was added is:
    name of rule:
    @{Microsoft.BingNews_4.1 ... webky .... msresource://Microsoft.BingNews/Resources/ApplicationTitleWidthBranding}
where in the above I replace with "..." some alphanumeric strings (they look to me random)

a similar listing with "windowscommuncationsapps" in place of "Microsoft.BingNews"

    "group" field for the rule:
is similar to the name of the rule

    permissions:
I think all connections are permitted in the rule

    recent solution attempt:
    1) to change local group policy for firewall as suggested by a related post.
    2) to disable task scheduler tasks

    observation:
events manager registered some events which included within there descriptions something like the "bingnews" string listed above (see detail 2). These events are related to windows update or automatic installation.. I will look again for more details of these events if it will help here

    details:
    Lenovo ,

    windows 10 pro

regarding what kind of solution I look for -- I prefer something to lock system settings in general. I had a similar problem with firefox cookies settings, and I prefer a single solution that will prevent changes to settings
that are defined by the user
