How to Fix 'Click here to enter your most recent credential' in Windows 8 and Windows 10


Information If you reset the password, or change the primary alias of your Microsoft account, then you may get a Click here to enter your most recent credential notification the next time you sign in to your Microsoft account on a trusted Windows 8 or Windows 10 PC.

The "Click here to enter your most recent credential" notification is to verify your identity again on the PC by asking you to enter your password after clicking/tapping on the notification.

Sometimes the "Click here to enter your most recent credential notification" will keep showing despite entering the correct password for your Microsoft account.

This tutorial will show you how to stop the Click here to enter your most recent credential. Your Microsoft account needs you to sign in again. notification for your Microsoft account in Windows 8 and Windows 10.


EXAMPLE: "Click here to enter your most recent credential. Your Microsoft account needs you to sign in again." notification










Here's How:

1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Credential Manager icon.

2. Click/tap on Windows Credentials at the top right in Credential Manager. (see screenshot below)



3. Under the Generic Credentials section, look for the listed MicrosoftAccount:user=(email address) credential for your Microsoft account. (see screenshot below)



4. Expand open the MicrosoftAccount:user=(email address) credential for your Microsoft account, and click/tap on Remove. (see screenshot above)

5. Click/tap on Yes to confirm. (see screenshot below)



6. Sign out and sign in to Windows 10 to apply.

7. Open the Store or OneDrive, and sign in with your Microsoft account. A new correct credential for your Microsoft account will now be created in Credential Manager. (see screenshots below)

The app can do an instant translation of what the camera is showing. I used that myself on my cheapskate Chinese Wifi repeater without an English language option.

On a side-note. I got that "click here to sign in" pop up today. Reading through the comments here and the solution attempts, I think I'll just try and wait it out a few days or so, as it looks like it could be some server-side temporary bug.

I would suggest you to switch your Microsoft account to a Local account first and then switch back to Microsoft account. Please refer to the following steps:

1. In the Start search, type 'Settings and press Enter.

2. Choose 'Accounts'.

3. Under 'Your account', click 'Disconnect' option available under your Microsoft account name.

4. Follow the onscreen instruction to create a local account.

Now, on the newly converted Local account, follow these steps:

1. In the Start search, type 'Settings and press Enter.

2. Choose 'Accounts'.

3. Under 'Your account' click 'Connect to a Microsoft account'.

4. Enter the Microsoft account ID and Password and click Next.

Follow onscreen instruction.

Did you make any changes to your computer name or email address of your Microsoft account? Basically anything that would change your credentials?

If it keeps doing this after applying the tutorial a few times to make sure it syncs, then you could try switching your account to a local account, and switch it back to a Microsoft account to toggle and hopefully stop this.

Just to report that the annoying message still appears but have noticed that when I switch to the settings window the word "verify" briefly appears then disappears. So part of my computer thinks it needs a credential while another part knows it doesn't.

Haven't yet tried signing into another identity.

 

Thanks for a very direct answer to something MS Techs just spent an hour and never got around to covering. My concerns are the possible consequences of doing this and if there are none it solves my problem.
At some point in the past I have somehow manged to create a Personal MS account with the same login as my Work account.
And being they are the same, I appear I am now logged in as Personal for some time. The system I am on "says" it is also on a Local Account using my login. The problem is that I cannot install the deployment tools for the "next Generation" Sync for Business One Drive unless I connect to Office using my Business account. I am not even sure how office is running at all since as a "Personal account" I do not have access to Office 365 Small Business, it is tied in with my Business email account.

What worries me most is that this system acts as a "shared storage" for many people in the office who are all connected to it via "Local Accounts" over a small office network and I am concerned that these shares may be connected in some way to my profile. If I change it to where it should be using the correct logins to make it a Business account, will that in any way disconnect all those other local users?

Doing the tutorial will only remove the invalid saved credentials in Credential Manager forcing it to ask you to renter them so it can save the updated credentials.

Any share using invalid credentials will be asked to enter the correct credentials when they try to access the share.

I had also noticed posted a method of disabling the Windows 10 credentials manager as well as posts alluding that the manager itself can cause issues. On looking all the stored credentials on this system, I could how that might happen!

Would you happen to know whether there is anything gained from logging in with a "Microsoft" account (whether Personal or Business) vs using a "Local Account" ?

I ask this because at this office many of these systems were once windows 7. When they upgraded there was a lot of confusion about the difference between Local accounts vs Microsoft accounts to log into their laptop as either seemed to work with no problems. This only got worse when we discovered that we fell into a 3rd category ( Work ) which is a "type of" Microsoft account but one purchased through a Microsoft Partner.

When Windows 10 asked Users to sign-in to Windows using their Microsoft account everyone assumed it was the same as their Work Account used for Office 365. Those who did this found that it worked but required them to create a different password than the one used with their "Business Office 365" account.

When they did this, it created a Free "Personal" account such as I mentioned here. Once this became obvious I was concerned about how to "fix" the confusion without losing the "network". Your solution worked and was appreciated!

Since they have and use Office 365, signing in with the same Microsoft account would make it easier to use Microsoft services.

I have tried multiple methods for fixing this. Unfortunately, nothing sticks. I've even tried multiple MS accounts, but eventually it will still come back asking for the credentials. I haven't changed anything, so it has no rhyme or reason to it.

At a certain point, I even had reinstalled the OS completely, (Not to fix this, but some other issue) and it eventually still did this. Anyway, how I've resolved this for the most part is by creating a local Admin account. It appears I can still connect to the store using the MS account...Download & install apps or updates. Then logging back out of that account in the store.

The only problem I still see is the native email/calendar app will, for some unknown reason, need to have the account settings "fixed" You click on "Fix.." then it takes about 30 seconds or so & then baam, it's fixed!! I believe that problem is still related to the account or OS. One of my accounts that it needs to be fixed is a gmail account. So, it isn't just because of a outlook account. It's got to be a MS account issue or OS problem.

Any thoughts on fixing this?

Have you noticed any sort of pattern if this tends to happen after any action?

Do you have all Windows Updates installed?

 

Yes, it has when I had everything up to date.

It will ask for credentials even if I'm not using store apps...
Even after fresh OS installs, any MS accounts will end up asking for them. Sometimes I verify the credentials and immediately it will ask for them again

 

Sometimes, right when I think I find a pattern, something happens and it makes me question it again
