Windows 10: Fix the VeraCrypt "Automatic Repair" issue on Windows

VeraCrypt is a popular open source encryption tool that may be used to encrypt files, create encrypted containers, encrypt entire hard drives and partitions, and even the system partition. Encryption of the system partition adds a bootloader to the system which loads VeraCrypt on system start. You enter the password, and if configured the PIM, and the system boots if the authentication is correct.

Windows may interfere with the setup as it may add a bootloader of its own to the system which is then used by the device instead of the VeraCrypt bootloader; this is a problem if the system partition is encrypted. Windows' bootloader cannot find any files and loads repair options as a consequence.

Repairs are unsuccessful as no data can be read, and you end up with the automatic repair message "Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC". Restarting does not address the issue as the system is caught in the bootloop. The same process happens over and over again.

Advice: to avoid the automatic changing of boot information on Windows devices, set a password in the UEFI interface. Windows cannot manipulate the data anymore once you have set a password so that the issue does not happen again.

You may have options to bypass the issue temporarily. If the motherboard includes options to select the bootloader, you may use it to pick the VeraCrypt bootloader; this is not the case for all systems, however. You may also select Advanced Options > Use a device > Veracrypt Bootloader in the Automatic Repair interface to start the system again using the correct bootloader. Type your password and PIM, and the system should boot normally.

Repairing the Automatic Repair issue




You may be able to repair the issue. Basically, what you need to do is "tell" the system to use the VeraCrypt Bootloader on system start. A program like Bootice may assist you. It is a free program that displays UEFI boot entries and gives you some options when it comes to these.

Download the program from this site and extract it after you have done so. Run the application, allow the elevation, and then go to UEFI > Edit boot entries.

All you need to do is move the VeraCrypt Bootloader to the top. Select the bootloader entry and use the "up" button to move it there. Leave everything as is and select close. Exit the application and restart Windows.

If everything worked, you should see the VeraCrypt password prompt on boot. The bootmanager is used from that moment on again. Note that you may still want to set a password to avoid running in the same issue again in the future.

If you perform via desktop then I suggest you to boot your device using installation media.

I suggest you to perform the startup repair using the Windows 10 installation media from the below link and check if it helps.

Boot from the Windows 10 installation media and then perform automatic repair and check if it helps.

Follow the steps to perform Automatic repair:

• Insert installation media and restart the computer.
• Select language and click on Next.
• Select Repair your Computer and click on Skip this drive.
• Select Troubleshoot and click on Advanced Options.

Here choose the option Automatic Repair and follow the prompted instructions.

Windows won't reset or restore, Automatic repair loop

Hi Bruno,

When the Automatic repair fails, we can suggest using the command prompt from Windows 10 Boot Options menu to run bootrec commands to fix the files the Auto Repair couldn't. Here are the steps:

• On the windows Recovery Option, choose Troubleshoot >
  Advanced Options.
• Select Command Prompt.
• Enter the following commands in the Command Prompt:

• bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
• bootrec.exe /fixmbr
• bootrec.exe /fixboot

Once the repair is done, restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved. Let us know the outcome, so we could provide further assistance as necessary.

Windows 10 random automatic repair after changing boot priority.

Hello. So i have an Windows 10 Pro. Sometimes when i am changing in bios boot order from USB to HDD ( SDD ) windows starts booting with AUTOMATIC REPAIR and then restarting. Is this something with BIOS \ Windows 10 bug related? Tested on pc and on laptop , and sometimes it doing the same.


Situation on PC first,listen:

Few days ago after i change boot in UEFI BIOS from USB to SSD.
Then Windows 10 showed at 1 boot Automatic Repair.
When starting Windows 10 boot loader starts by "preparing automatic repair" and diagnosing pc.
Interesting is that if I restart Windows (after procedure mentioned earlier) it will boot normally. This startup problem was occured only when starting system again after shutdown or restarted pc from windows.So i was needed 2 boots to boot properly to windows.
But on pc, format was needed to remove completely issue and after format is fine.

Pc :
2x8gb Kingston Hyperx 1600mhz DDR3
SSD samsung Evo 250 gb
4790k stock
Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 with UEFI BIOS


Now laptop with old standard bios:
On laptop i made the same operation, change boot from USB to HDD and on first boot Windows 10 shows Automatic Repair. But it happened once and i cant reproduce. No format was needed.

laptop is very old with 2gb ram

Why on pc format was needed when on laptop not?
