Fixing Missing NAS Drives After Win 10 v2004 Update

In case other people have this problem, I'm posting the solution that worked for me.

After the most recent Windows update this week, I noticed mapped drives to a Synology NAS could not be connected or remapped. Other Windows PCs in the household that had not been updated did not suffer the problem so concluded the NAS was fine.

After attempting to remap a drive I got error Error Code: 0x80070035 “The Network Path was not found”. After an hour of head scratching I found that Network Discovery was switchedoff in "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Centre\Advanced sharing settings" and, furthermore, could not be switched on because returning to the setting showed it had been switched off automatically.

The rabbit hole got deeper and I discovered the reason was that the "DNS Client" service was disabled in services.msc and, furthermore, could not be enabled. The answer in my case was as follows:

    • Run regedit.
    • Navigate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Dnscache
    • Locate the Start DWORD key and change its value from to 4 Disabled to 2 Automatic.
    • Close everything and restart windows.

After the above steps and remapping the drives, everything was back to normal apart from my missing afternoon.

Would be interested if anyone knows if this could have occurred from anything other than a Win update. I'm keeping an open mind.

    :)

    Windows 10 & NAS Box

    Hi Peter,

A few possible reasons can cause this issue. To help us identify the cause of this problem, we would like to know the following information:

    • How is your NAS box connected to your computer? (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB)
    • Are you using a program provided by the manufacturer of your NAS box to access it?
    • Do you receive any error messages when accessing your NAS box? If yes, what is the exact error message?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you perform the solution provided by omiklik (Most Helpful Reply)
in the following thread: Unable to see NAS drive on Network - Win 10 PC.

Keep us updated on the status of the issue, and we will be glad to assist you further.

Robocopy broken in Win 10 v2004?

Is robocopy in Win 10 v2004 totally borked?

I have been using a batch file for 5 years now to robocopy my documents, desktop, etc to a folder on my Synology NAS. I bought a new Dell, upgraded it to v2004 (kicking myself). I changed my script to robocopy from my NAS to my new PC. Everything appeared
in the "failed" column. Eventually, running out of ideas, I copied robocopy.exe from my old Dell (Win 10 v1909) and ran the same batch file using the old robocopy. Everything looks like it copied! But the log file generated had nearly no data inside and
    the format was a mess.

    \\nas\home\robocopy \\nas\home\desktop %userprofile%\desktop /E /DCOPY:T /COPYFixing Missing NAS Drives After Win 10 v2004 Update :DAT /EFSRAW /R:1 /W:3 /NP /log+:%userprofile%\documents\xfer_data.log

Once I got the data transferred to the new PC, I tried the script to back up data TO the NAS again. Nothing copied. Meanwhile, the ancient SyncToy still works like a champ.
