Windows 10: Folder lost which had a few hundred photos, chkdsk saw them, recovered them, I can't find them

I use an external hard drive to store my photos. It is WD My Passport 2 TB

I use a Windows 7 laptop with an SD reader to download my photos from the camera card. My normal practice is to go through all the photos and delete the blurry ones.

Then I dismount the external drive and mount it on a small Windows 10 laptop. The W10 machine does one function that W7 does not, so I use it to 'Enhance' and 'Crop' and straighten.

Then I dismount and put the drive on my W7 laptop. From there, I can post to Facebook, or send in email, etc.

The W10 machine is a Linovo ideapad, so small that it cannot download patches. I keep it permanently in airplane mode, truly just use it to work on photographs.

I take all this equipment on trips and until Jan 2, never had a problem.


Jan 2

I was on a ship with very limited internet access, not even Google or email. I spent the day at Port Stanley, on the Falkland Islands.

I shot photos of the town and then visited a place with 3 kinds of penguins. I got fabulous close ups and have a wonderful day.


Back on ship, I followed my normal process, set a folder called Falklands on W7

Threw out 25% of the photos.

Shut down the W7 machine.

Moved the cable to W10.

I went into windows explorer, pulled up the selection list. Falklands was there.

I clicked on it and a message came up saying it was not available or something.

I went back to the list, Falklands was gone.

I shutdown the W10 machine, brought up W7 on the other laptop and connected the drive.

Falklands was gone there, too.


At some point there was a message about the drive needing a scan, did I want to do it? I said yes, and then it asked me if I wanted to force a dismount. Not knowing for sure what that was all about, as I had never seen it before. I said no and ran diagnostics. It said the drive was dirty, and I should run chkdsk /f.


I kept a copy of the log, and it said it found files and recovered them. I was unable to find them. I looked in the trash, but when I restored the trash, I only found the blurred photos I had trashed.


So, how do I get my photos back?


And, by the way, on the 4th, it did the same thing, but I had a backup copy of the photos, so they are not lost.


Please, help me find the recovered files.

Lost folders on Update

How to recover the lost messages?


1. Re-create your mail folder hierarchy by dragging folders into place in the Folder list. Note that any folder you have created to group sub-folders but that does not itself contain messages will not appear in the Folder list and so must be created again.
2. Re-download the list of newsgroups from each news account.
3. Reset your subscribed newsgroups and download messages again.
4. Reset synchronization options on IMAP and newsgroup folders.
5. Edit any message rule that moves or copies messages to folders other than the Inbox.
These are the steps from which you can get the lost information back. And if your information not recovered again then it might be severe problem .In this case you have to go for recovery software to get your dbx files data back. Lost a REALLY IMPORTANT folder

• Did you lose it after upgrading to Windows 10?
• How long has it been since you installed Windows 10 on the computer?

Windows 10 does not apply changes or remove personal files without your permission. We suggest you restore the previous version of the folder or drive that used to contain the files you are looking for. Refer to this
