Windows 10: For network shares to work password sign-in is required - how to default to password...

On Windows 11 Pro tested here only:Users cannot access network shares e.g. mapped to drive letters if they did not sign-in to the OS using their password based login credentials.However, Windows 11 recommends and asks users to setup a Hello PIN and thus causes issues when accessing network shares.Users must be able to default to one of both sign-in methods. In 99% of our use-cases the password based sign-in is required. How can we switch to that sign-in option while still keeping the option to log in with the Hello PIN on demand?Please do not tell me to delete the PIN sign-in method or how

Hi,

About your concern with typing the password after being idle, it is actually recommended to activate for security reasons.

If you wish to disable it, I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Settings.
• Click on Accounts.
• Click on Sign in options.
• On the right side, you will see required sign in.
• Change it to Never.

If I do a reset this PC, can I setup local user password network share

I was wanting to share files on the LAN but it requires a password. If I do a reset, sign in with a PIN and my Microsoft account, how can I setup a local user password so that I can share files on the LAN?

Lot of work just to do that one thing.

Anyone have a step by step? There is apparently an unknown local password set and it can not be changed. I login with PIN on all my PC.

 

Password Protected Sharing, Password required is an old password.

I want to see files on a W10 computer from a W7 computer via WiFi or Ethernet LAN.

Advance Sharing Settings:

Windows 10 and Windows 7, File Sharing, Password Protected Sharing is "On" for both computers. No "User group" is setup on either computer.

Steps:

I use "Windows Explorer" on W7 to navigate to W10 through "Network" in navigation pane.

W10 and "Users" are visible on W7.

When I click on the desired user, the following popup opens:

"Enter Network Password"

"Enter your password to connect to:W10"

When I enter L:
*** Email address is removed for privacy *** and CURRENT password, it is rejected. Files and folders on W10 are not shared.

When I enter L: *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and OLD
password, it is accepted. Files and folders on W10 are shared.

I expected the required password to be the same as I use to log directly into W10; the
CURRENT password. How can I update the required password to be the current password?
