Windows 10: forced to reinstall windows and lost all my files.

Got stuck in the start up repair loop and was forced to reinstall windows from a flash drive and have lost everything. Is there anyway to get my files back? I didn’t know this would happen and lost some very important material. I run Windows 10.

Are you able to log into computer?

This issue might have occurred because of upgrade file corruption. Follow the steps below and check.

I suggest you to create a Windows 10 installation media and perform a Startup Repair on the device and check if it helps to resolve the issue.
This is an alternate way to boot the device and run recovery tools when something goes wrong with the Operating system.

Please follow the steps below to do Startup repair:

          Insert the installation USB drive
          and boot Windows 10 from it.
          
          If you don't have one, you can Create an installation Media.
          
        • 
          In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’
          and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.
          
        • 
          Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
          
        • 
          Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Startup Repair’
          and select the operating system.

Lost files following Windows 10 reinstall

I realize the inconvenience you are experiencing with Windows 10.



I would like to inform you that when you perform a reinstallation of Windows 10, Windows.old folder might get deleted.



When you perform reinstallation of Windows 10, it will remove all your personal files, apps and drivers you installed, apps and customizations from your PC manufacturer, and changes you made to settings.

To assist you better, please provided us the information below:

• Have you taken the backup of Windows.old files in the external hard drive?
• Are you able to access System Restore points on the computer?

LOST WINDOWS 10 START MENU

After trying all suggested fixes, I finally was forced to use Windows Recovery under Settings to reload the full system. I lost all non-Microsoft applications but recovered the start menu. Though this was a painful, no other suggestions worked.

Windows created an HTML file listing all programs that was deleted and that was very helpful for reinstalling mt lost programs.

Thanks to everyone for their effort, perhaps Microsoft will discover the root cause of so many who are losing the Start menu and can prevent it in the future.
