Windows 10: Format Entire Hard Disk into Extended Partition

Hi.

I have a laptop with an SSD and a Hard disk (1 Tb) - Windows 10 Professional 64-bit Version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Both are GPT

I would like to convert the ENTIRE HARD DISK ONLY into an Extended Partition with 6 or more logical drives.

I was able to do this on my other systems (Windows XP and Windows 7)- but that was many years ago.

All the software I have reviewed (and posts in this forum) only refer to converting unallocated space (after the 4 primary drives) into an Extended partition. There is nothing about converting the entire hard disk.

I am not sure how it works, but understand that if I convert the Hard Disk from GPT to MBR (leaving the SSD at GPT) then the entire HARD DISK can be formatted as an Extended Partition (subsequently with 6 or more logical drives)

I could always setup 4 primary drives and do the other logical drives on an extended partition - as a last resort.

I am getting on a bit in years to work with GPart and CMD unless very simple instructions.

I don't mind paying for software that can do the job. If any software is recommended, I would prefer one that includes Image Backup and Restore features.

Run CMD


1. diskpart
2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

2. select disk #
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.

How to remove a hard drive partition????

I see that you want to remove the partition where the Windows 7 32 bit is installed. I would suggest you to format that particular partition (Windows 7 32 bit) and extend the partition where the Windows 10 64 bit is installed.

Please answer the below question to understand the situation better,

Is it an external Hard Disk Drive?

Follow the below steps on how to format and extend your hard drive,

1. Press Windows + R for Run.

2. Type diskmgmt.msc

3. Right click the partition you want to format then Select format.

4. Then right click and delete the partition.

5. Select the partition you want to extend and then select Extend volume.

Note: I would suggest you take a backup of your data before formatting. Microsoft is not responsible for any data loss.
