Windows 10: Formatting Ext Hard Drive for System Image

I'm using Windows 10 version 1909. If I want to make a system image, can I format the external drive using NTFS, FAT32 or exFAT? Do all three formats work?

• What is the make and model of your system?
• Do other USB devices are getting connected to the system?

As an initial step if troubleshooting, I suggest you to try connecting the external hard drive through different USB ports and check if it is getting detected, also try connecting the same external hard drive to a different Windows 10 system.

Also, connect the external hard drive to the system and check whether the device is shown in Device Manager.

• Type Device Manager in the Search bar and press
  Enter key.
• Click on View option and click on Show hidden devices.
• Check whether the device is shown.

Formatting a dual boot system with windows 10 and ubuntu

In Windows 10, you can easily format a hard drive or a partition by accessing Computer Management. For us to assist you, we suggest that you follow the steps listed below:

• Press the Start button.
• Type Computer Management.
• On the left side, click on Disk Management under Storage.
• Locate the drive that you want to format.
• Once located, right-click on the drive and choose Format.

If the hard drive has not been formatted with the steps that we have provided above, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your hard drive. Some hard drive requires a software that you'll need to use just to format it.

Build 16232 System Image Fails

System Images are picky, you can only store it on drives formatted with NTFS. How many drives you have? If you have 2 or more, can you make sure that the other hard drives in NTFS format? You need to store your drive’s current files in a safe place. You
can copy the drive’s files back to your computer, to a flash drive, or burn them to a CD or DVD before formatting the drive by following the steps below:

• Click the Start menu, and choose Computer.
• Right-click your drive’s icon and choose Format from the pop-up menu.
• When the Format window appears, be sure to choose NTFS from the File System menu.
• Click the Start button.
• After formatting the drives, try again the System Image process.
