Now I'd like to haggle price!
I haven't seen a word yet on pricing for Win10 except it's free for owners of Win7 or Win8 and you make the change within one year of the final release date.

    Now for the fine print..............
I own two copies of Win7 Pro. I have a retail product key for each.
Basic logic tells me that I will either use the same product keys to register my new copies of Win10 when the final hits the floor. .... or I will be required to surrender the Win7 keys to receive new Win10 keys?

Now, I install the final releases of Win10, my Win7 keys are gone, and my new installs will be supported for the life of the devices.

My devices are old Win7 machines. Life expectancy? Already several years old? Not forever for sure!

Now, for instance, 13 months after Win10 final is released my 64bit version of Win10 won't boot. Dead motherboard!
Woe is me! Alas! What to do???
MS said for the life of the device! The device is dead! The machine has to be replaced! So, I have no machine, no operating system, and no retail Product Key!

I think this is where I pay for the "free" upgrade to Win10?

If my understanding of this current situation is correct I'm swapping retail keys for keys essentially the same as current OEM keys.
The machine and OS live and die together!

    Am I right?

    :)

MS hasn't really gone into details of how this is going to work. When I'm ready for a new computer unless I decide to build my own, I'll buy one with the OS already installed.

Were not sure yet because MS has not disclosed enough information on this subject. It's too early to speculate about this, IMO. But I think if you want to keep a copy and transfer it on any PC you want then you should buy a DVD/ISO when it comes out. That way if you ever have to re-install the OS on any PC you can and not worry about a thing.

Yes,, it will be free but it's unknown how or what will happen if you/I/anyone will do if a hardware failur results in a need to re-install the OS.. Primary drive failur or motherboard failur.

I plan on getting both the free upgrade and a copy so I can install it on any PC I want to and any time I want to.

I build my own machines and buy retail Pro versions of Windows for the OS so your solution won't work for me. I think I'll wait for MS to publish some details before I surrender my Pro version keys for Win7.

In the long run, it's cheaper to buy a separate License for Win 10 rather than upgrading your 7. That's what I will do. Free upgrade is a bait.

And you/anyone can perform a clean instillation and that usually is the best rout to go.

Just be careful not to buy a System Builder OEM version. Unless MS has changed the EULA it's only good for one computer.

The keys will come with your retail purchase. I don't know if you'll have to buy the disk or if Windows 10 will also be available as a download.

You're making a number of incorrect assumptions, which I am of course making assumptions that the licenses will continue as they have in the past.

First, You don't "surrender" your licenses for the previous version. You are legally allowed to run either OS on the same machine. This is known as the "downgrade rights" option. You are free to upgrade to 10, then downgrade again. I would interpret this to mean that you can also have a dual boot situation, but i'm not a lawyer.

Secondly, if you are upgrading a retail copy, the upgrade has the same "retail right" as the original. So you can move it to another computer. What Microsoft is referring to as "for the life of the device" is for OEM versions, with 99% of people have. Nearly all things Microsoft state about licensing of OS's are under the assumption that its an OEM license. The same is true of other upgrades in the past. The key is that you must treat the old copy and the upgrade as a single license, despite whether or not you have new license keys.

Again, I'm not a lawyer, and this is based on previous licensing which could change for Windows 10, but I wouldn't worry about it until Windows 10 has been released.

I mean, what difference does worrying about this now make? You can't change it....

"Remember this is going to be a dual boot on one machine. ... In order to dual boot Windows 7, you will need to have two licenses (meaning you ..." (from Google moments ago)

One of us doesn't understand Windows licensing very well...............
