    Freeze after meltdown/spectre patch ?

Been using chrome for some hours and got my first freeze (with no reboot) when I was placed into a Overwatch match.

Seems like chrome did release some meltdown and spectre fixes to version 64, (so did Firefox in version 58.0) so I'm going to try and use an older version of chrome to check if it happens once more.

I'll try to keep isolating the issue but this is getting pretty frustrating for me. My current guess is that the CPU malfunctions with any meltdown/spectre patch that has been released to current software (Windows, Firefox, Chrome: all released patches to this issue) but I'll be sure if the older versions of the browser make the freezes happen again.

    rBose could you check something?

    Can you go to
    Firefox Options > Update history
and check if your system updated Firefox to version 58 the same day you started to get freezes once again?

I can't check on my pc since I installed windows 10 and everything else from scratch yesterday.

Yep, I can confirm that freezes began to happen about the same day i updated to 58.0, I also have to mention that theres been a 10 day gap with no freezes (im using the pc everyday for almost everything, 3d modeling, watching movies and playing games) and for 10 days its all been cool and quiet. I believe i had version 57.4 before 58.0 and as far as I know i still had freezes while using it.

At this point i dont know what to believe anymore, i uninstalled the windows meltdown patch, what more can we do ? Im pretty pissed of

    Freeze after meltdown/spectre patch ?

My issues stopped entirely 2 months ago after I manually uninstalled those god aeful spectre patches, later Microsoft uninstalled them via a patch too, I recommend doing a check for updates or doing a fresh Windows install using the media creation tool.

one observation tho, the build installed via the media creation tool is plagued by a global issue, the cpu sits in 100% because of some process, you gotta do some regedits

  5. This is exactly what is going on with my rig, too. Precisely as you've described, never a deviation in order.

I use Firefox/Waterfox and Chrome though. Does not matter, still happens with both. Even when I'm only just letting them idle, doing other things (which I must find a bit odd).

I have even tried uninstalling flash and all the rest like that and it only SEEMS to reduce the frequency of incidence. Had a hunch it might be related and it sure seems to be. Can't recall it happening even once without a browser open. But this here system of mine has never, ever had a freeze or anything else BEFORE this damn patch (and Fall Creators Update I'd deferred; both barged themselves in my environs on the 13th of January).

Like you, I also see absolutely NOTHING of even vague possible association to this in Event Viewer.

What in the heck did this patch do, that even after uninstalling, it DIDN'T revert to the prior operable condition? (Oh, it had better not be something irreversible to the hardware proper or I'll flip my lid. Big time).

Haven't tried uninstalling it yet, and now I won't bother seeing as it didn't help you. And it'll just reapply itself anyway. So really, what's the point?

Guess I'll just be over here, twisting in the wind. Doubt MS will ever sort it. Been four months like this already.
