  1. Freeze at 33% during update to 1709

Running 1703 on Intel Hardware w/ SoundBlaster audio and Nvidia GPU.
    Samsung SSD.
Peripherals include wireless 360 receiver and Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse dongle.

Machine badgering me about updating to FCU, and "chooses" to update even when I tell it specifically not to.
Every time machine reboots, it begins the lengthy update to 1709, and the progress wheel freezes/stops spinning at exactly 33%.
Computer never BSODs or spits out an error.
I have to hold down power, and when I reboot, Windows rolls back to 1703 automatically.
After logging in, stupid Windows starts pestering me again with notifications to install the futile update.
I told it to remind me in three days, it reminded me the next morning.
In the Start menu, I have options to "Shut down", "Restart", "Update and Shut down", or "Update and Restart".
Blasted thing begins FCU update no matter what I choose.
Anyone know where to buy a grenade?

Already tried deleting all files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and re-downloading.
Already tried using Media Creation Tool.
    Already ran WindowsUpdate.diagcab

How do I find the cause of the freeze?

    :)

Windows 10 Feature Update 1709 hangs at 33%

    Hello,

One of the most common reasons why an update may fail to install is due to missing/corrupted update components. At this point, we would suggest that you try to follow the steps provided in this support article to resolve this issue:
    Fix Windows Update issues.

Since you have already ran the Windows Update troubleshooter, kindly proceed to step 4 of the article and download the most recent Servicing Stack Update that matches your Windows version.

Let us know how it turns out.

  3. Windows 10 Feature Update 1709 hangs at 33%

I ran the tool and the update twice, hanged at 33% both times. It didn't pass me much information, said it repaired a registry key and something about a pending reboot the first time. Just the pending reboot the second time.

Typically, the 30-33% spot is where it is installing drivers, in particular the graphics drivers. If you have any AV apps running, try disabling them from running. There is a reboot right before the 30-33% point and an AV may be starting at boot and interfering with the driver installation. This is my best guess at this point.

As far as why it ignores your 3 day reminder request, that's anybody's guess. Might be because it failed, rolled back, and the reminder part is messed up.

Anyway, try the disabling of any AVs, and see if it helps.

  5. Thanks for responding! I don't know what you mean by "AV app". Do you mean some kind of media player, or are you talking about uninstalling the driver? -or perhaps the Nvidia Control Panel?

AV = Anti Virus. Like Norton, Avast, Malwarebytes....that sort of thing.

  7. Ah. AV = Audio Video in my mind. Okay. I only have Windows Defender.
I went in to Device Manager, and Uninstalled my sound card and GPU, and chose to delete the drivers for both.
Also went into Control Panel and uninstalled the Nvidia Control Panel, then rebooted.
Downloading upgrade through Media Creation Tool now.

Good choice! When you're all done, and cleaned up, and backed up.....you can go run the MCT again and save it as an ISO somewhere for repair purposes. It's about 3.8GB. Good luck!

If the above works then problem solved.
If the above does not work consider these steps:
    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    a) sfc /scannow
    b) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    2) remove all unnecessary peripherals from the computer
    3) uninstall the printer
    4) view the sometimes hidden Panther logs and post the logs into the thread:
(one drive or drop box share links)
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther
    setuperr.log
    setupact.log
    Setupmem.dmp
    setupapi.dev.log
    Event logs (*.evtx)
    BlueBox.log
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback*.evtx
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log

  10. Thanks for the suggestions!

Turns out it was this stupid little Wi-Fi card that I had disabled in Device Manager. Removed it from the motherboard and the update completed.

Just a wild guess. He remembered he had disabled the wifi card because it was giving him trouble of some kind. That triggered the thought to yank it. Probably roached or defective and driving the sys nuts! *Smile

  14. That is exactly right. Some time ago, Windows stopped booting for me, so I went into Safe Mode and disabled several things.
I only disabled devices I didn't care about (on-board audio jacks because I have a sound card, on-board video because I have a GPU, Wi-Fi card because I'm on Ethernet, etc.)

After starting this thread, I decided to re-enable all of the disabled things one by one, and went to the motherboard manufacturer's website to download updated drivers.
There was only a Wi-Fi card driver for Win7 & 8, and when I tried to enable it, the system crashed hard. Mouse froze, no BSOD.

I thought, "Huh, that's an awful lot like the crash I get when I'm updating. I wonder if in all Microsoft's infinite wisdom, they told the update installer to re-enable disabled devices MID UPGRADE? You know, because users disable things for no reason."

Lo and behold, after a system crash and power-down, I removed the card, and re-attempted the download of 1709 from the Media Creation Tool. Success.

This was after four days, one hundreds reboots, several beers, and a lot of cussing.
I think I also swore I'd switch to Linux, but I'm a gamer first, Linux user second, so that's not happening. I needs my Steam library and my Fallouts.
