  2. Frequent UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_TRAP_MODE BSODs

    Hello,

I am facing UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_TRAP_MODE BSOD frequently starting today. My system was crashing quite a bit recently (it started happening after a recent update and the issue I got back then was HYPERVISOR_ERROR). Looking around, I saw that I should update my device drivers which I did through Dell's SupportAssist. Did a few hardware checks through the same and they all seem fine.

Earlier today, my screen just froze. No errors, no BSOD. This used to happen quite a lot before as well, I removed the RAM sticks and reinserted them and that managed to fix it before and so I decided to do the same. Now, I keep getting random BSODs with UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_TRAP_MODE. So far it has occurred twice in the past 6 hours. In both cases, I was playing Overwatch and I am not sure if this is linked to that. I checked the dumps with Windbg and the first dump mentioned Overwatch.exe as the process name. The second one, however, had MsMpEng.exe as the process name. It seems to be linked to Windows Defender. I have also run Windows Memory Diagnostics and the RAM sticks seem to be fine. I am on a laptop so I would have to unscrew/screw my RAM sticks twice if I need to test it with MemTest86 which I will try later if needed. Can anyone assist me with this. I am adding the contents of the latest dump below for further details:

  3. Frequent UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_TRAP_MODE BSODs

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the swift response. I haven't performed these steps yet as I troubleshot more last night. Ran memtest86 and RAM sticks seemed to be fine. Upon investigating further, I think it might have to do with Windows Security's Memory Integrity (in Core Isolation). For context, I use a Dell G15 5510 and recently updated Alienware Command Center (AWCC), and Realtek Audio drivers. I did receive a message when I accidentally launched AWCC about something being incompatible which caused an issue with overclocking. I brushed it off since I don't overclock. This conflicted with Memory Integrity. Upon checking Event Logs, AWCC had caused issues around the time of the crashes which is why I am currently not ruling out this possibility.

I haven't faced a crash today and I did have some gaming sessions (both Overwatch, I faced the two early BSODs while playing this, and Valorant).

This conflict has been addressed by Dell here - https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/Core-Isolation-Memory-Integrity-incompatibility/m-p/8276232

If I do run into further issues, I will perform the steps you mentioned and revert back with my results.

Hope this helps anyone else who runs into this.

    Thanks!

TLDR: It might be Memory Integrity (Windows Security > Device Security > Core Isolation) which is conflicting with AWCC. I guess this only applies to certain Dell PCs (link has the list of affected systems). Try turning that off. It hasn't caused any issues for me in the past 10-12 hours. Will update if something pops up again.
