Windows 10: Frequent crashes and corrupted Input.dll, riched20.dll files

This issue was previously submitted, and was under work by Nada Nabil_A, however it seems their account has been retired and they are no longer responding. I cannot replace a corrupted RICHED20.DLL file.

From admin Command Prompt, run:

• TAKEOWN /F c:\windows\syswow64\riched20.dll /a
  
• ICACLS c:\windows\syswow64\riched20.dll /grant administrators:F

Frequent crashes and corrupted Input.dll, riched20.dll files

For the last couple of years I have been experiencing frequent random crashes on my PC. These crashes are no BSoD or shutdowns, but complete freezes that require a hard shutdown by holding the power button. These are independent of what software is running, and do not occur with any predicatability. Sometimes right after startup, sometimes several hours later, sometimes not at all. The event log simply records that the previous shutdown was not expected but does not indicate the source of the error.

I have tried multiple solutions including some hardware replacement options in order to resolve the issues. This includes a new PSU, new GPU, full RAM replacement, startup with no USB devices connected, health checks and stress tests of the CPU, GPU, and RAM. The only problems I have been able to locate are via the SFC. When using the "sfc /scannow" command from the admin command prompt, it tells me that there are corrupt files that could not be repaired. When I examine the log it shows me the following at the end (as of the scan performed yesterday, 4/25/2023):

I do not know if these particular dll files wilI cause the crashes I am experiencing. have also attempted to use the SFC from safe mode with no change in status.

When I attempt to use "regsvr32 %windir%\sys32\riched20.dll" or similar commands to re-register the dll files, I get an error stating that the "entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found".

Any other assistance in locating the source of the crashes or repairing the broken dll files is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback, John. In that case, one could run the complete set of commands to restore the default ACEs for the file, as in the article Error 2894 RICHED20.DLL GetLastError() returned: 5.
