Frequently Asked Questions about the WIndows 10 Free upgrade

While that is good information, I really created this FAQ to deal with the confusion around the upgrade offer and licensing. I'd rather not complicate it with things that are only tangentially related. Maybe you can create a new thread

Tangentially being the key word. *Wink

I think if I was someone who was currently using Windows 7/8.1, and knew nothing about Windows 10 seeking information about the free upgrade, then what I have to do on 29 July is exactly the sort of question I'd expect to be answered in a Sticky thread with this title, in TenForums.

I believe it's not tangential to the thread title.

It is probably more correct to say it is tangential to the thread intention (which as Mystere says is more about the specific licensing aspects of the upgrade offer).

And I also think a more general Sticky thread would be useful to users new to Windows 10 - not unlike this thread over in EightForums. *Wink
I'm not sure what to call it though... you have perhaps already taken the title I'd be tempted to give it. *Wink

Frequently Asked Questions about the WIndows 10 Free upgrade

Let's see now . . . "Frequently Asked Questions About Windows 10" would be a good title. Not Upgrade, not licensing, not free, etc., etc., etc.

Another would be "Windows 10 Frequently Asked Questions". I'd also like to see a thread on "Windows 10 Tips and Tricks".

None of these titles would infringe on Mystere's thread title.

How about "Frequently Asked Questions about Upgrading to Windows 10?". Yes, it seems very similar, but is semantically different. One is about the Upgrade itself, the other is about the process of upgrading.

Microsoft really needs to start giving clearer answers with regards to upgrading retail licences and whether or not the free upgrade is transferable after July 2016. If not, then there's no point in anyone with a retail 7 licence even taking the upgrade. Unless you're okay with going back to the older OS once you build a new pc. It would mean people who have "supposedly upgraded" and paid a lot for retail licences only have the same rights as someone with an OEM licence.
That isn't what people have paid a lot more for.
Anyone with a retail licence should wait a while and see exactly what's written in the terms before accepting the upgrade.

My God, the upgrade is free, a hand out, a gimme, we're not paying $40, $60 or what ever, for it. I'm just thankful that I can put it on my 2 machines at no additional cost.

You're making it sound like I'm being ungrateful, I'm not. I'm just stating a fact that if people have paid for a retail licence and want to transfer later then they might as well just stay on their old OS. What's the point in upgrading if the upgrade isn't transferable? You'd be on a newer OS then have to go back to an older one when you transfer your licence.... Utterly pointless!

There's no point in worrying about it. The upgrade is free, you're not out any money if that is the case, but we don't really know and won't until RTM most likely. Microsoft doesn't "need to start answering questions"... they didn't even need to tell us any of this at all. They could have simply waited until July 29th to give us ANY information, and there's no real requirement that they satisfy your (or anyone elses) obsession with knowing every detail weeks before its even an issue.

If Microsoft gives us info, great. If not, we'll find out eventually.

    Trust me, I'm waiting.... Patiently.
I'm guessing we probably won't get any really helpful information with regards to this until July 29th. Would be nice if we did though as some people (not myself) would like to have the information before they choose to upgrade on July 29th. Some people want it on day one.
Personally, I have no intention of upgrading within the first 6 months of it's release anyway. I wouldn't rush into it. I have no "obsession" with regards to any MS products though. *Biggrin

Actually, they do have to give some info if you live in the U.S. at the time we install windows 10 rtm EULA/Windows as a service agreement the reason contract laws very from state to state. I don't see how Microsoft going to make One EULA and windows as service agreement for everyone in every state for everything. For example, some states require separate contracts for each service or programs. I am not a lawyer. I read about it.

In the U.S. we also have the FTC Microsoft has to follow their rules and regulations as well. A good example windows 10 consumer release can never become subscription based but a later future version of windows could as long windows 10 would still work. You wouldn't be forced to upgrade to the subscription version.

Groze, Mystere is right . . . Microsoft doesn't have to tell us anything until we receive the product (Windows 10) and start to install it. Further, I'm not a lawyer either, but I can tell you that Microsoft's legal department has their collective rear ends covered completely and we'll be totally locked into whatever the license says. And, I don't believe there'll be anything like a Windows as a service agreement.

Windows 10 is not a service. Sure, Microsoft is treating it like a service by updating and upgrading it "perpetually" for the supported lifetime of our devices; however, Windows 10 is a product. We pay for it one time for each device we install it on.

I have recently gotten several notices (one for every Microsoft account I have) that Microsoft's terms of use will be changing to be more simplified and easier to understand. So, I'm betting the EULA (End User License Agreement) will be nothing like anything we've seen before. Just a WAG, but from the emails I've received, maybe not so wild after all.
