Frequently Asked Questions about the WIndows 10 Free upgrade

I just asked a simple question that's all. Not sure why I got the response I did. If it looked like I was being aggressive then I apologise, I wasn't. I don't have any obsession with finding out the details, I've just been wondering about the retail licences that's all.
I understand Microsoft doesn't owe us anything, it would just be nice to have some information about the upgrade.
I shall wait and see if anything is made clearer on the 29th. Like I said, I'm in no rush to take the upgrade and I'm extremely happy with Windows 7 at the moment. *Smile

I didn't want to sound hard, sorry, I forget sometimes, written can be taken or understood differently than when spoken eye to eye.*chuckle

I have a friend at work, who was wondering about this too, and after I discussed it with him, he decided to make the upgrades, and
later, if 10 works well on all five of his family's computers, he'll just buy a key when the time comes to upgrade his MOBO, being it would be, theoretically the last key he'd need to purchase, he said "No big deal".

Hopefully this answer came across friendlier and not so sarcastic.*Smile

No problem Cliff and thanks. Didn't mean to come across as demanding myself.
And yeah, I know what you mean about it being the last version of Windows. At least people won't have to worry in future about loads of different licences.
When people have upgraded from 7 to 8 to 8.1 to 10 I guess it does become a bit more difficult. *Biggrin
There will be no more need for future upgrade licences if MS does make this the last main version.

I actually think MS should tell us everything about the OS. This is their big push towards a unified OS, the last OS, the OS they want everyone to be on. Why on earth shouldn't they tell people everything?

Agreed, but they're probably on such a rigorous schedule and such a tight time frame that they're 'flyin by the seat of their pants' as it is, plan as you go style! *Wink

Nobody said they wouldn't. The question is the timing... Until they release the final, nothing is final, so anything they say could change anyways.

And they will, Boozad, once Windows 10 reaches RTM. Until then, whatever they tell us may or may not be included in the final build. I know they're reworking (or may have already finalized) the legalities such as TOU and the EULA.

I've been in this Technical Preview since October and there are a lot of things that were included then that aren't included now. As well, there are things included now that weren't included then. I'm sure we'll have a few unexpected "by design" idiosyncrasies that not even Microsoft will have found. So, I don't expect them to tell us about those. *Smile

Take, for instance, the Control Panel. It's being picked apart bit by bit. There are things MIA that I've used regularly, such as Windows Update. It's not hard to find in the new "Control Panel", though. *Smile Folder Options is now File Explorer Options, but seems to give the same options. Would you call that change for the sake of change? Because I don't see any improvement in the new name.

I don't believe Microsoft has ever told us exactly what is and isn't in any new OS. They tell us the best parts of it and hope we'll be convinced to buy it. However, this time we don't have to buy it. *Dinesh

well, i put in my 2 here, which will not be worht much if Greece stays in the EU.....

We can hardly expect that M.S. will give away Windows 10 and or Office 2016 for free for what reason ever.

But if they do, we will be paying for it in another way.

Maybe they want to make money like Apple does.....they try to squize out every penny you have also...

So my final thought, we will be paying for Windows 10 on a yearly basis, so you will pay FOREVER.

I hope i am wrong here

I don't know how but MS is going to make a profit somehow. I can't see updates and/or upgrades for Windows 10 being free forever. I was getting ads in the weather app. Maybe MS is going to include ads to generate profits.

Cost saving alone from having to maintain one core OS will be huge.

Remember that we consumers aren't the only game in town. I'll admit there are a lot of us, but we're just a drop in the bucket when it comes to revenue for Microsoft.

Look at this page: https://www.visualstudio.com/vs-2015-product-editions For "us" there's a free Visual Studio Community edition and for corporations, there are Professional and Enterprise editions, costing $1199.00 and $5999.00 per year respectively. Corporations, large companies and some small businesses with a large number of PCs will have volume licensing of Windows 10. This is only the tip of the iceberg and as I said, "we're" just a drop in the huge ocean of revenue for Microsoft.

Think of the number of corporations with thousands of employees subscribing to Office 365 for Business . . . At $150.00 per year per user, that's a buncha moolah! For 1000 employees, that's $150,000.00 per year!

So, Microsoft isn't losing a whole lot by giving us a free upgrade to Windows 10. In fact, they have our enthusiasm and past work in perfecting this OS. How many of us work for large corporations? We'll either be singing Windows 10 praises or turning a thumbs down. Either way, there will be those who say, "Wait a minute here . . . let me try it for myself . . . Word of mouth is a powerful advertising gimmick and I believe that's what Microsoft will have by having gifted us in this way.

    @jeffrys (Jeff)

If Microsoft did something like that with windows 10 Microsoft might get in trouble if it violates one of are laws in the U.S. I know Microsoft would never intentionally break a law.
