Windows 10: Freshly loaded latest VLC media player will not play any format

Freshly loaded latest VLC media player will not play any format.
I have tried uninstalling then reinstalling. I have looked at ways to upload codecs butthese just seem to re-upload VLC.
I have tried both mp4 and AVI files and the play without problems on other video players.
Where do I go next?
I am using Windows 10 latest version.

Windows Media Player supported formats?

In Windows 10 October 2018 update, are there any formats that are supported by Windows Media Player that are not listed in the Default Apps sections of Settings? I know that WordPad supports doc files on a basic scale, but this function is hidden, manual
association needs to be made. I prefer Windows Media Player on my LTSC desktop to VLC due to the organised interface, especially on music, but I also keep VLC in order to play the formats that WMP does not support. If I install VLC with the option of file
association, there is at least one file format of WMP that still needs to be associated with WMP when VLC is installed even when WMP is selected as default audio and video player. So, I wonder if there are some other formats that are supported on WMP at least
on a basic level that are not listed into Default Apps.

To assist you better, I like to know; is issue confined only, when trying to play .MKV files using VLC media player?

As an initial recommendation, I suggest you to try playing the .MKV file format using any other media player, which support .MVK file format and check if it helps.

If .MVK files play properly with other media player then it might be an issue with VLC media player.

I suggest you download and install the latest VLC media player from the manufacturer’s website and check if it helps.

VLC Media Player Question?


I am looking for the object code for windows using VLC media player on my website. ~just for audio ~ VLC was suggested by Microsoft. I found a code that was really long and wrong ~ lots of redundancy..it was poorly written. I know there is a shorter better version out there. I now have the object code for windows media play ~ that is now defunct ~ does not work on windows10~. So far, I have had minimal support and the wrong 800 number from microsoft for VLC. No 800 number on VLC website. No online chat. they did provide an email address. If Microsoft is not supporting windows 10 with an updated media player ~ it is really unfortunate. They have simply dropped the ball. Any help out there?
