Windows 10: from W7 pc to new W10 pc What to expect & how to migrate my data

Have read much about updating to W10 but nothing found about abruptly changing to the current W10 OS

My W7 laptop crashed after 4 years, so I'm in a position being forced to buy a new laptop that comes with W10

Many changes since W7 so Im trying to prepare for the learning phase of now being forced into using W10.
I know that old terms like "My Computer" etc have changed and there will be a small learning curve in learning to navigate.

Any help or web sites that could help me learn the new W10 and how I can migrate my data from the old laptop's HDD would be greatly appreciated from someone who has been through this already. Thanks for your help.

windows 10 did not migrate my computer based windows 8.1 e-mail messages

Forgot to mention I use a laptop & not a tablet. I thought the upgrade came with the latest mail program! I fail to see why an update (if it is an update) of the mail program would migrate my 8.1 mail as the upgrade is over, done & the data was not migrated.

The data should have been on the PC somewhere that we could copy the old mail messages to the new location.

I am also looking at buying a new W10 laptop & I expect to be able to copy my old Vista mail messages to the new PC. I will not buy a new laptop if this is not the case as I do not want to lose YEARS of saved messages that I refer to often.

File transfer windows 10 to windows 10 using backup and restore

I have a PC running W7 and plan to buy a new PC in a few days with W10 preinstalled. In order to transfer files & settings (not applications) I am proposing to upgrade the W7 PC to W10, then backup files & settings on the old PC with the intention of restoring
those files & settings on the new PC. Does this seem a reasonable plan?

 

If you used Win 7 long then you won't have any problems. 10 is a lot more like 7 than 8 was. I hated 8 , like 10 so far, really liked 7 a lot.
After logging into 10;
If you look at the picture; on the task bar you will see a folder icon. (click the picture to enlarge it.) That is your file explorer



Click on it and you will see the next pic. The "recent files" grows as you use your computer. You can delete them from the list at any time. You know, maybe you don't want other users to see what you've been looking at. It is a quick access to those files if you leave them there.



You will see in the list on the left; "This PC" That is the same as "Computer" in Win 7, or "My Computer in previous versions.
Click on "This PC" and you will see:



All your drives are listed. If you have a thumb drive, camera, or external hard drive hooked up, it will show here. Click on them to access them.

Is that the W10 default desktop bacground image? Can I personalize with my own as in W7
Also can my sektop be personalized with shortcut icons of folders of my choice as in W7?

 

Yes, that is the default image. You can personalize 10 as long as Windows 10 is activated. Shortcuts are the same as in 7.

 

There isn't much of a learning curve at all. Most of my users take a day or so to get used to 10, and then they are off and running.

As for your data, normal options work if you are able to access the files on your old computer. You can copy them to an external drive, flash drive, etc. If you can't, then you may be able to pull the hard drive from the old and hook it up to your new laptop with a cable or external housing.

 

The best way to retrieve your data from the old laptop is to purchase a SATA to USB cable. For one time or infrequent use just a cable adapter is between $5 and $10. I prefer to put my old laptop hard drive in SATA to USB enclosures for more permanent use as external hard drives. The enclosure will be between $10 and $20.
