  2. Ftp not working

I think that I have pinned down the problem, and it is probably nothing to do with windows. When I log in with each of my three clients (on my desktop), it seems get as far as trying to list my remote directory before failing. This suggests that it is actually in contact with the server but failing at that point. I then try contacting the server using the Cmd window and the ftp command. This worked OK, as did the cd, get and put commands. However the dir command listed the directory but then hung - more or less at the same place as the ftp clients hung. Thanks to all for advice, but I now think that this is back to my FTP host help desk. This still leaves the open question: why does it work on my laptop but not my desktop? John

windows 10 not able to connect to ftp server through network

Hi, thank you very much for providing these suggestions!

    1. Firewall and Router Configuration:

I have tested with firewall shutdown. About the router I am not sure how to test. But I have several other Windows/Linux machines on this local network that can connect to the FTP servers normally.
    2. FTP Mode (Active vs. Passive):

The FTP servers requires passive mode, which is specified in my python code and is the default setting by FileZilla.
    3. Testing from Different Networks:

My other machine can work properly on this network.
    4. Public FTP Server Accessibility:

      This was tested
    5. FTP Client Configuration:

      This was tested
    6. Windows Settings:

      Firewall was shutdown
    7. Network Isolation:

      Other machines work
    8. FTP Server Logs:

I do not own that server.

windows 10 not able to connect to ftp server through network

Thank you very much for reaching out! As an Independent Advisor and fellow Microsoft user, I'm more than happy to assist you.

If you are unable to connect to FTP servers on Windows 10 despite trying multiple methods and disabling firewall and antivirus software, there are several potential issues and solutions to consider:

    1. Firewall and Router Configuration:
      • Ensure that both port 20 and port 21 are open on your router and firewall. FTP requires these ports for data transfer and control connections.
      • Verify that your router is correctly forwarding these ports to your local machine if you are trying to access the FTP server from outside your local network.
    2. FTP Mode (Active vs. Passive):
      • FTP can operate in two modes: Active and Passive. Some firewalls and routers may block one mode. Try switching between Active and Passive modes in your FTP client settings.
      • In FileZilla, you can change this setting under "Edit" > "Settings" > "FTP" > "Transfer Mode".
    3. Testing from Different Networks:
      • Test the FTP connection from a different network to rule out any ISP-related issues. Some ISPs may block FTP traffic on residential connections.
    4. Public FTP Server Accessibility:
      • Ensure that the public FTP servers you are trying to connect to are accessible from other devices or networks. You can use online tools like "yougetsignal.com" to check if the ports are open.
    5. FTP Client Configuration:
      • Double-check the configuration settings in your FTP client. Ensure that the hostname, port, username, and password are correctly entered.
      • For example, in FileZilla, ensure that the "Host" field contains the correct FTP server address, and the "Port" field is set to 21 (or the specific port used by the server).
    6. Windows Settings:
      • Make sure that the FTP server is allowed through the Windows Firewall. Go to "Control Panel" > "System and Security" > "Windows Defender Firewall" > "Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall" and ensure that FTP is allowed on both private and public networks.
    7. Network Isolation:
      • If you are on a corporate or restricted network, there might be additional network policies or firewalls in place that block FTP traffic. In such cases, consult with your network administrator.
    8. FTP Server Logs:
      • Check the logs on the FTP server for any error messages or connection attempts. This can provide insights into why the connection is failing.

By systematically checking these potential issues, you should be able to identify and resolve the problem.

Please feel free to reach out if you require any additional assistance. I'm here to help!
