Function key died after upgrade to 10

    Asus Eee PC 904HA
    Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHZ - 2 GB ram - 160 GB
SSDThis is thesecond upgrade that I have done (the first was on a Lenovo running 8.1). The upgrade on that machine went without ahitch. Yesterday I upgraded my AsusEee PC 904HA (Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHZ - 2 GB ram - 160 GB SSD). The upgrade was from 7 Starter. The download went without any problems as was the installation. The problem I am having is with the FNkey. It does not work and it appears tobe stuck so when I try to type a P I get a -. I discovered the problem while login on to PIA (the first letter of myuser name begins with the letter P. Ihooked up an external keyboard and everything worked that way. I have looked for drivers on the Asus websitebut could not find any that would apply to this mystery. Does anyone have any ideas? I only use this little computer whiletraveling for doing things like checking email and surfing.

  2. Cursor Pointer does not move by Arrow-keys on the keyboard:

    Good morning

My laptop is (Toshiba / Satellite / C55-A-1MW / PSCGJE), which comes with the keyboard (102-key / European layouts / Norwegian language), and (Windows 8.1 / 64-bit).

After i have upgraded to (Windows 10 / Home), the arrow-keys on the right to the touch-pad stopped to function!

Now i dis-activated the (NUM-LOCK), and use the arrows on the numeric keypad: (8 for: Up, 2 for: Down, 4 for: Left, 6 for: Right).

    Notes:

    1. Now, even when i open BIOS before Windows to startup, the arrows on the numeric keypad is the only available way to move the cursor.

    2. These arrow-keys do not function both whether when the (Scroll lock key) is activated or not.

How to make the (Arrow-keys) function? Please advise.

    Thank you in advance.

    Have a nice day ...

  3. Windows 10 after 29th July 2016

I bought win 8 pro key in retail not OEM, been using it & upgraded to 10 pro on its launch day. A partition is created on hdd for storing upgrade info. My question is after 7/29/2016, if my motherboard dies, got it for warranty, with the same model & brand
but different serial number, OR my hdd dies without backup cloning & have a new one, will i still be able to activate windows 10 pro using the 8 pro retail key i owned?

When trying to type letters on an notebook and you see numbers this is always because the Num Lock is switched on. To turn it off, you have to hold FN and press the Num Lock button. Then try typing letters and you should be OK.

I spent over 1.5 hours with the Microsoft Help Desk and allowed one of their "technicians" to manipulate my computer and they were not able to help. You with a couple of sentences were able to help me and I thank you very much.

I had the same problem myself. Then another helpful fellow told me what to do. "I'm getting old while constantly learning", as we say in Greek. Glad to help

I have an Eee PC 904HA. So it runs on Windows 10 then? No driver problems? I assume you did an in place upgrade rather than a clean install upgrade, is that right? I didn't know you could upgrade Windows 7 Starter to Windows 10 - which version of Windows 10 does it upgrade to please?

Yes, you can upgrade any Windows 7 version to Windows 10, as long as you have installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. Windows 7 Starter SP1, Windows 7 Home Basic SP1 and Windows 7 Home premium SP1 are upgraded to Windows 10 Home. Windows 8.1 (core) is upgraded to Windows 10 Home. Windows 7 Professional SP1, Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro with WMC are upgraded to Windows 10 Pro.

Thanks. I was asking because it didn't work for the netbook we have with an Atom N2600 processor (Cedartrail) as there is no driver for screen resolution made by Intel. So wanted to check if the 904HA with different Atom processor worked ok or if any extra drivers were needed.

Yes, Intel says there is no Windows 10 driver for older hardware, but you can download the Windows 8.1 or 7 driver and try installing it. If you see a message that it cannot be installed in this version of Windows, right-click on it and select Properties. Then click the Compatibility tab, check the box and make that Windows 8 or 7 as required. Also check the Run as administrator box just in case. Now try to install it again and it should complete without any complain!

Thanks! I did try the Windows 7 GMA3600 driver - worked for about 6 seconds then crashed and went into a loop. I didn't find an option to run it as administrator or in compatibility mode. I downloaded the driver onto the desktop, double clicked on the file and it just installed itself. Is there a way round it not doing that?

Right-click on the downloaded file and select Properties (last on the list). Then click on Compatibility tab, here you can check the box and set compatibility to Windows 7. Before clicking OK to confirm, also check the Run as Administrator box. Now it should work, unless it requires a more elaborated tweak.

Thanks I'll try that then. So do I install it like that from the download, or use device manager to install it please? Actually I'm not sure which driver to download from intel. I'll start a new post on that.

Ok - copied the exe file from an sd card onto the desktop. The right clicked into properties, set it to run in W7 compatibility mode and set it to run as adminstrator and saved those settings. The right clicked - run as adminstrator. Looked perfect for a minute or 2 then it crashed again with a black screen then a blue screen with an error message. Am resetting it now. I did try to work out how to install it through device manager (there were instructions with the driver) but it couldn't seem to find the file on the desktop.

I believe I need the .inf file - how do I get to that please. I went to 'have my own disk' and selected the sd card drive with the driver still on it, but it couldn't find the download on the sd card (it is there, it just didn't show up).

You probably downloaded the executable (EXE) version. Try downloading the compressed (ZIP) version instead. Then you should be able to extract the installation files to another folder. Click on the search icon and type Device Manager. Click to open it and expand Display adapters (if your card isn't there look for other devices or unknown). Right-click on your adapter and select Update drivers. Choose last option every time, until you see a Have Disk button. Click on that and browse to the folder you extracted the drivers. Then proceed with the installation. If you have difficulties, ask us again.
