Windows 10: Function of D drive. Can I choose not to format during test installation of another OS?

Hi, I bought my refurbished laptop and the reseller has installed windows 10 on it. I'm planning to test run a Linux OS but I still want to be able to reboot back to Windows 10.In my laptop there are two internal drives C and D. Can I know the function of the D drive? Is it for reformatting/clean install?Can I choose to run installation of a Linux OS on the C drive during the initial setup?If I want to reboot back to win 10, can I choose to start a clean install from the D drive from the BIOS menu?
