Fuzzy/Blurry letters on external display (DPI scaling issue?)

    Hello -

    Relevant data

    • Microsoft Surface Book - i5 - 256 GB with NVIDIA GeForce GT 940M
    • LG 34UM58-P - Ultrawide IPS Monitor (Also tried on an acer HD monitor)
    • High quality mini display to HDMI cable
    • Windows 10 Pro 1709
    • Surface Book just freshly set up
    Description

    • In essence, all text (not only in browsers, but also in generic windows menus, see images below) are slightly fuzzy - while being tack sharp on the Surface Book display.
    • Based on my search on this forum and the wider web, this is a known issue, but none of the solutions or workaround suggested have worked for me. ( Been spending a full day and a half on researching this and I think I tried them all)
    Display settings Settings

    Illustrative images/screenshots

I believe this is a known bug in Windows 10, where it can not correctly handle 2 monitors with different DPI scaling. The posts on this forum suggest that the latest versions of Windows should have fixed this issue, but for me this is not the case - as I
am indeed running the latest version of Windows 10

(I also posted this in the Surface forum, but since this appears to be a Windows issue and not a Surface one, I thought I would try my luck here. Apologies for the cross post.)

    Any advise greatly appreciated.

    monitor suddenly displays fuzzy

Yesterday (Nov 26) when I came into work in the morning my PC was off (not usual). Once I got it booted up (Windows 10) and was typing in a Word document, the screen suddenly looked different. The text is fuzzy and the proportions of the text just doesn't
look right. Everything looks wrong -- not just Word. It's really annoying.

Did I bump a keyboard shortcut to change the way the monitor displays? If so, what's the shortcut so I can get it back to normal?

I tried all kinds of keyboard combinations. I tried updating the monitor's driver. I played with the display settings. Nothing has made it look normal.

(at work I'm the only employee and we have no tech support)

Fuzzy display with 2560x1440 on new monitor

Windows 10 Takes Screenshots Incorrectly at 2560x1440 (Multiple Displays)

Hello, and thank you for your time.

I seem to have found a solution so I'll provide details here to hopefully help anyone else who might encounter this issue.

On the software side of things, nothing has been changed recently. However, I did just get a new 2560x1440 monitor. On my old, 1920x1080 monitor, screenshots worked as expected, but now on this monitor, they do not.

I encountered this problem only after I got this new monitor.

There is a second display connected to my computer, and it is a nearby TV. So I had an idea and did some more experimenting today. I told windows to only display on display #1 (my monitor). I took another screenshot and now it works properly at 2560x1440.

So then I re-enabled the 2nd display (my tv), and now the problem is back. So it seems that the second display being enabled is the cause. So I just have to disable that second display before I take a screenshot and it works correctly.

Normally, I have Windows set to just duplicate both displays, so both screens show the same image.

I don't understand why Windows shrinks the image to 1920x1080 but keeps it in a bitmap of 2560x1440 when the other display is enabled, though. I mean I understand why its shrinking it, but it makes no sense to put the shrunk image into a fullsize bitmap
for no reason. So you'd think the entire bitmap would be 1920x1080 with out the extra areas padding it out to 2560x1440 in this case. Weird.

Obviously it needs to shrink the image to fit that smaller display when sending the video signal to it, but the size of the screenshot has no reason to be scaled down, though. Could be a video driver thing, maybe. The computer is running an NVIDIA GeForce
GTX 970. Video drivers are fully up-to-date (v376.33). I'll send NVIDIA feedback to let them know about this issue in case its a driver bug. My computer is currently on Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview build 14986, too.

Lastly, here is a screenshot so you can see how the bottom and right sides of the screenshot are padded out with extra space to make it a 2560x1440 bitmap (when display #2 is enabled). You can tell the screenshot was scaled down not only because its smaller
than 2560x1440, but also by the visible artifacts of that scaling (especially on the text in the image if you zoom in on it in the windows Photo app or a paint program).
