Windows 10: Games freezing and unable to end the process->Prevents W10 shutdown

Hello there!

So, the problem is on the topic and here's the details:

-Never occured before

-If the system is run for a ~>5m period with this problem, process manager becomes non-responsive also.

-Steam platform games; GFX-freeze, sounds keep on going.


Only things I've updated manually are:

-Windows

-VPN service

-Geforce drivers


The problem has risen during the last 2-3weeks and it has occured:
-Games from different platforms Steam; Tropico 6, Witcher 3, Battlestate launcher; Escape from Tarkov, so it seems universal across developers.


What I've tried:
-Checking for new/weird processes

-Running malwarebytes + CCleaner

Hello Theodore,

The app is preventing shutdown indicates that there is an open application that you might need to close in order for you to shutdown the PC directly.

To check the specific application, you may follow these steps:

• Open Task Manger by pressing Ctrl +
  Shift + Esc.
• Select the Processes tab, and this will show the application that is currently open.
  
• Look for the application and click End task.

Dave,

Regarding your fix, I intended to attempt it today. (After messing with W10 so much, I got behind on my work and resorted to the W7 Pro side of my PC since we last spoke.)

I have question, please. What exactly does your 'fix' accomplish? Does it actually fix what is causing the shutdown freeze? Or is it a 'workaround' that causes W10 to automatically force close the errant driver snagging the shutdown?

I determined that the alleged app that won't close and prevents shutdown (according to buggy W10) is a component of the massive Nividia GeForce driver.

Again, does your fix correct Nvidia's behavior? Or just gives W10 a way to auto force close? The former is a fix. The latter is a bandage.

@DaveM121 -- Thank you for confirming the Mystery App is actually a Nvidia driver process. You are on a roll!

And your answer pointing to Nvidia might explain another W10-1803 bug ... which is my GeForce GTX 960 loses my custom display settings after every reboot or shutdown (and that is even after Nvidia released 3 new driver updates since the release of W10-1803).

Sir, I am experiencing a lot of crazy bugs in W10-1803, such as Sticky Notes freezing; Screensaver showing a blank black screen; some menu items in File Explorer right-click menu don't work, and etc.

Are you having any issues with W10-1803?

BTW, you have an interesting PC. Only a 128GB SSD...but an I7 and a Quadro. Sounds like a Day Trader's PC or a high-end corporate office PC.
