Windows 10: Games question

*sarc I was just wondering, if there is a way to add the old games like windows 7 has.. such as
Solitaire, FreeCell etc, to windows 10.. It has a games tile but seems that is for Xbox games,
well I don't have such an item.. No Xbox, no smartphone and none of those gadgets.
On 7 i like to play Free-cell. So ?

the game should have been updated by them to work on modern versions of Windows, but the Compatibility settings

with an asterisk still may be required.... Hmm, not at Good Old Games, Humble or Steam. Collectable disk then ? ]

The game was released in 2000, and probably uses the earliest version of DirectX, which puts it in the era of problematic games.

- Because the game is not installing, my first guess is it may use a 16bit installer, which are not compatible with any 64bit Windows version.

Your only hope here is to...

Install the game on a machine that is using 32bit Windows. Copy the games folder to your 64bit machine and the game should

still run (unless missing Registry keys prevent it).

(When you do this, the game will not display in Programs and Features so rather than uninstall the game you would have

to delete the games folder and associated files).

- Or, trawl the internet for a fan site that you can download a 32 bit installer from as these work on 64bit as well. You'll have to be lucky,

but there are a few out there, and the SW series is popular ( I found one for Grim Fandango on Win7 64bit).

Some games of this vintage also have fixes for colour and audio.

- And, some old games just don't run on integrated graphics.

*- Other things to do with older games, if you have not already ...

Go to - Programs and Features > Turn Windows Featured On or Off

Enable - Legacy Components & Direct Play

Note that since the 1709 update Win10 may pop up a message to the effect it needs to install something if

Legacy Components & Direct Play have been disabled, but it may not do so with all games, similarly to the tweaks below.

- R/click on the games shortcut or the main executable ( .exe ) in the games install folder and select
Properties

Click on the Compatibility tab and try using the compatibility mode for Win95 or Win98.

(This may not be necessary, and not guaranteed to help in any case. Disable again if they don't help).

*- Use the Compatibility Settings (Win10 forces this on many games that don't need it but tends to miss many that do)...

Override high DPI scaling behavior (use Application with games)

This option helps centre old low resolution games on the screen.

*- Occasionally the next option - Disable fullscreen optimizations is required as well.

This one can sometimes help get a game running.

graphics processor.

Or what brand and full model number laptop are you using ?

Yes you can do a search for games at the store. Solitaire is free to download I think. Good luck

 

Yeah, I seen that but that Solitaire is not the same version that's on win 7.. and my personal opinion is that I don't like it. Hopefully they will give us the old ones back.
