Windows 10: Games that use directX 12 engine are always crashing and sometimes they crash on dx 11.

Directx 12-11

- What brand and model graphics processor and cpu does your machine use ?

- Win10 has DirectX 9,10,11 and 12, and there are numerous DX files.

The game determines which DX files are used, not Windows, and not the user.

The only time the user is involved in which DirectX version a game uses is when the game uses both DX 9 and DX10 or 11.

Some of these games have an option to select DX10\11 effects on the graphics settings it can use DX10 or 11 with,

and the game uses DX9 with other effects. Other games will automatically use DX10 or 11 effects when you select the highest graphics settings for those effects.

Many recent games, including Fortnite, are DX11 exclusive.

I believe the few games that use DX12 are DX12 exclusive.

- Should there be any missing or corrupt DX files, the installer linked to by Andrew should sort that out.

 

I have DirectX 12, but application requires DirectX 11

Because DirectX does is not a driver....

Because they are entirely different types of DX. DirectX is not forward or backward compatible.

- Win10 has a number of DX9,10,11 and currently, two DX12 files (with 64bit Win10).

( btw- Win7 has DX9,10 & 11 )

Windows does not select which version of DX or which DX file a game or software uses.

The game or software selects the files it requires.

- There are a number of reasons why a software or game may not run because of DirextX.

The main reasons are...

1) The required file is either not installed, or is corrupt.

- If you have never updated DX first try updating DX with the DirectX Web Installer

- In the event that DX is up to date, and there is a corrupt DX file you need to reinstall DX using the

DirextX Redist (June 2010) installer package.

2) The graphics processor is not capable of using that version of DirectX.

Were you able to play Assassins Creed (which one ? ) on the same machine with Win7 ?

If so, your graphics processor should not be the problem.

Yes, the main dxdiag page may show DirecX 12, but this is the highest level of DX that Win10 is capable of using

(For Win7 this was DX11 - Vista, DX10 and XP, DX9 ).

What is shown in the Display Tab > Feature Levels ? This is what your graphics processor is capable of using.

- Some games may show a DX error when a graphics processor is capable of using DX11 but is not capable of

running the game ( often when using integrated graphics ).

- What brand and model graphics processor does your machine have ?
